I'm on the same wavelength. I'm not excited about buying another Windows-OS. I've explored Ubuntu with my current pc and all the existing hardware seems to function just great based on the Live-CD installation. The only shortcoming is the conversion or migration of my data from WinME hdd, to the new Ubuntu environment. And... there are a few favourite win-apps that I would miss. I'm working out a conversion/transfer plan right now before I feel that I have no choice but to purchase XP afterall. My WinME is networked to another XP pc, so the plan is to copy all the WinME data (probably the entire drive) to a networked external hdd. Then the idea is to make a clean install of Ubuntu on my old WinME pc. Then I should be able to either access my networked drive or simply plug it in my new Ubuntu pc and gradually port over the data I want to keep. I've juggled the idea of getting a brand new pc too and decided that if and when it should come to that, it would be a Mac. Quite frankly, I'm fed up with MS's SR problems, defragging, Scandisk'ing, etc. WinME served me well over 8 years. But a few recent hardware upgrades to the pc (more ram @768meg, and a new video card) have proven that WinME can't handle that. Well.. I don't want to throw out perfectly good hardware. I'd rather throw out WinME.
