I'm far from a ME expert but have modified the registry to XP and 98SE before and have had icon problems. Have you refreshed the icon cache? If not, give it a try and see what happens. It has worked for me in the past although your problem is more unique but who knows? See Icons randomly change to different icons. The page refers to random funniness with icons but will instruct you on how to refresh the IconCache and shows a registry (possible) fix. Good luck.
