Okay... I posted this in the old Windows 98 forum, but I figured I may as well post
it here too, since I'm still having the problem in Windows ME.

I have three computers on a home network system, with one shared network drive hosted
by my computer, and a shared printer hosted on my step-dad's computer (which will
be referred to as "PARENTS"). To be able to acces these resources, one must be able
to log on to the network when the computer starts. However, on PARENTS, we are having
problems with the log in prompt.

Whenever PARENTS boots up, it will present us with the log in prompt. This may be
the Windows Network prompt, the Microsoft Family prompt, or the regular Windows Login
prompt, it makes no difference. After only a fraction of a second, the prompt is
disabled, and Windows automatically logs in as the "Default", or null, user. This
is the same as if someone had just hit the "Esc" key at the prompt, and therefore
prevents us from accessing the shared resources, until we Log Off, and Log In again.

The surprising fact of the matter is that this computer is running on a fresh install.
We had these same problems when we were running Windows 98 Second Edition, and were
hoping that the re-format and upgrade would solve the problem.

I have been given a couple bits of advice on this problem sofar. One was to delete
a registry key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Network\Real
Mode Net\AutoLogon" which does not exist. Another was to create a string "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon\'MustBeValidated
= 1'". That key helps by prohibiting the "Default user" login, but still leaves
me with the annoyance of having to wait for the computer to process the bad login,
click "OK", and then log in as myself.

Does anyone have a complete solution to this problem, that will prevent the computer
from trying to automatically log on?
