Office XP disk activity

After upgrading 2 machines to Office XP, I noticed a large amount
of disk activity. I assumed it was due to a fragmented disk and attempted
to use Norton Speed Disk to defragment my drive. However, it would never finish.
Something was writing to the hard drive and wasn't showing up anywhere. A friend
brought in
a copy of PC Magazine that had a utility that would monitor your disk drive and identify
the last 12
processes that accessed it. After installing and running it, I noticed that there
were 2 main processes
that constantly accessed the drive. They were Mosearch and Mosdmn. I used Windows
explorer to
see if I could find anything with those characters in the name of either a file or
folder. Low and behold, a folder by the
name of Mosearch appeared. Inside the folder was a VBS file that said it was MicroSoft
Office Search.
I went to Microsoft's website and searched on Mosearch and found an article that
described how to turn off
the indexed search that was Mosearch. After turning off the routine, my drives have
been quiet and I have
been able to run Speed disk with no problems.
