thanks a lot for that cobi! i'll try it. may the force be with you... my system is a Dell P3 600 with 256mb RAM running winme and a noname ethernet adapter. the problem happened after i unchecked some entries in the startup tab of msconfig- but unfortunately remained after i re-checked them! i would reformat and start again, but it's part of a network and the network is never down for long enough to be able to do this, and as the PC is fine apart from this annoyance, i just put up with it. :-| i too, would be very happy to find a permanent solution.
