Question about 'Resolving Hardware Conflicts'

I have a question about Resolving Hardware Conflicts:

Last December, I bought a new DVD player from H-Val to put into my Dell computer. The handbook says to put the jumpers on the back to the master position. So, I do this and I get a hardware conflict with the Ultra ATA controller. So then I try to put the jumpers in one of the others (Slave or CS) and the computer does not recognize either the DVd or the CdRW drive. So then I look in the IRQ's and the DVD and the ATA are both using the same IRQ's. Everything works fine on my computer and I can watch DVD's but the problem is just annoying. Can anyone help?
