I have a question about Stop Windows from Detecting Devices:

Is is reallly impossible to stop Windows from detecting new devices, even with a registry setting? When I installed a Soyo 6-in-1 memory card reader (a USB device), Windows ME automatically installed a driver for it - with no option to cancel. The driver caused a cmdninst error which killed Windows and prevented rebooting except in safe mode (without a CD driver). This means that I can't change to the correct driver on the product CD. Can anyone suggest a way around this problem? Thanks.
