Subject: Perfect Defragmentation IS now Achievable!

VoptXP, Perfectdisc V5.0 and Diskeeper Lite. (All work on '9x & ME)

CUT & PASTE to an email message to activate the html links.

Having tried these products for the first time I have to say that I am very impressed
indeed. I seem to have tried all the defragmenters available after having enormous
problems with Windows Millennium Edition and a friend's '98se.

Now by using VoptXP from www.goldenbow.com to optimise the swap-file into pagefile.sys
and placing its 1024Mb at the front of the disk then running Perfectdisk moving the
blue and yellow files to the front of the disk and the red files to the back-end
of the disk and then back to the front again in two passes, I find that my directories
have been compressed into one very much smaller block and that the rest of the files
are now in two very smooth contiguous groups either side.

You have to set the virtual memory settings to 1000Mb Min & Max first and rebooot
the system, then use the figure 1000Mb in VoptXP too. 1024Mb is what you actually
see as the size of pagefile.sys whilst WIN386.SWP now remains at zero bytes.

When you run sysmon.exe you can still see Windows managing the swap-file inside,
or within, pagefile.sys. NO more problem!

You may not need as big a swap-file (pagefile.sys as 1000Mb so say about 2·5 times
your RAM)

The disk now fizzes lightly, instead of crackling, and the programs open very fast
indeed. Pages change in the blink of an eye and a posting to a Windows Forum showed
on the screen ... instantly! Literally in the time it took to click the mouse button!

I am frankly astonished at the difference, so I then ran Diskeeper, to see what difference
that had made, as I like having Diskeeper's Smart Scheduling to be on ALL of the
time to keep the disk defragmented automatically even when running and using programs.
(Full Version only but Diskeeper Lite is VERY much faster than defrag.exe and makes
a better job too.)

This feature does not seem to be available with Perfectdisk, although Perfectdisk
can be scheduled to run once a day or once a week, and which, although apparently
slower is VERY MUCH more thorough! It does get faster with time and the more frequent
passes you do, as all defragmenters do.

I have to say that I am finally delighted to have defragmenters which actually does
the job it is supposed to do.
I now use Perfectdisk once a month and leave Diskeeper on all the time. (See settings
in msconfig. Only ONE at a time.)

YOU can use VoptXP to include the line: AlwaysUnloadDll in the registry which helps
keep system resources free and to enable ConservativeSwapfileUse which makes Windows
use the RAM

***If you take VoptXP off your system do NOT perform a "roll-back" or you will lose
all the settings! ***
