Basic Disk Maintenance for ME / '98
After years of testing I find that the BEST way to do [free] disk maintenance is
with a Bootdiskette to which you add DELINDEX.BAT
This is a batch file which you should put on have on both diskettes AND place in:
C:\ , i.e. C:\Delindex.bat
There is the standard Windows bootdiskette: START-DISK
But I also use a FAST bootdiskette or: QuickCleanUpMaintenanceBootDisk
Then all you need to do is to put the bootdiskette in the A: drive before starting
your computer, OR, put the bootdiskette in the A: drive , whilst running, and re-boot.
The fast bootdiskette brings you straight to the A:\> prompt, where you type:
1. A:\>delindex , and press enter, then run the program to clean all old files off
the system.
2. A:\>scandisk /all , to check the file system on all drives even if you only have
one drive.
3. A:\>scandisk /all /surface , to do a thorough surface scan, which keeps the surface
active and helps prevent the formation of bad clusters. [Allow one hour per ten gigabytes
of disk.]
4. A:\scanreg /fix /opt , to repair and optimise your registry.
The beauty of running all these from a Bootdiskette is that there is NOTHING else
running, as the computer uses the bootdiskette in place of the main drive, but carries
out the operations on the main drivve.
After running all of these maintenance tasks, remove the diskette and press Ctrl+Alt+Del
to reboot your computer. [For Windows '98 , type: WIN and press enter.]
[NB: With '98 all of these commands can be run in DOS at the C:\>prompt.]
Now you have a clean boot and the BEST Free Defrag program to use is:DISKEEPER LITE DIRECT DOWNLOAD
This is the English Language version. If you require another language please visit
their site.
Using Ctrl+Alt+Del and then closing programs down one by one is tedious and time
consuming. Using a special program to close programs down is unnecessary.
You only need to do a surface scan once a month. Automatic defrag utilities run when
fragmentation reaches 2% and, therefore, run several times a day.
The CORRECT argument about defragmenting is: It is BETTTER to defragment 1% of fragmentation
100 times, than to defragment 100% fragmentation once. Consequently defragmenting
2% of fragmentation 50 times is better than defragmenting 50% of fragmentation twice.
[Long winded, I know, but it IS better to keep on top of fragmentation rather than
allow your computer to slow down.]
I hope that this clears things up for everyone.
