Try f2 or delete. I recommend rebooting and as soon as the machine has power, tap either of these keys continously until you get in. You may find that Compaqs boot past the spot where you can get into the bios quite fast and it may require a few attempts.

On mine, I think it is Ctrl+Shift+F10.

Try each combination (including none) of Ctrl, Alt and Shift with Del, Esc, F10,
F2 and BkSp. That covers all the systems I've worked with...

Jamie, Some Compaq's actually have a partition on the hard drive for the BIOS. If someone used FDISK to remove the partition, then you won't be able to get into the BIOS without either re-creating the partition or by booting from a floppy with the setup utility on it. One of Compaq's disks will re-create the partition, but of course, will blow away all the data on your hard drive. I had to download two programs from Compaq: 1) PC Diagnotics 2) Setup for Portables I got them from the Drivers section of Compaq's site. This was one of the files, it is for an Armada 1750, so it probably won't work if you have a different machine, but will give you an idea of what to look for: www.compaq.com/support/files/armada/us/download/8093.html Good luck!

Shut down the computer and wait 10 seconds. Turn your monitor on, then press F1 and turn on your computer, hold down F1 while the computer is powering up. Good Luck Sy

Hold down Function key and F8 then power up the computer keep these keys down and tap F11. You will then get an option to save changes F1. You should then be able to boot up from the A drive.

I cant and dont know how to get into Bios aswell. I have an Armada 1500 model, checked Compaqs site and they have a bios upgrade and in the fixes it says somthing about fixing an option within the Setup F10. so based upon that I presumed it is F10. but guess what it don't work. or i am not doing it right. I am pressing F10 as soon as the memory is displayed and keep pressing it until the laptop starts to beep when ever i press F10, then 95 starts. This is really starting to annoy me. any other suggestions would be helpfull.

I also had this problem on a Compaq Armada 1750 Notebook. I had just downloaded windows updates for Windows XP Professional. After the reboot the screen went blank. I thought the screen went bad on me. The holding down of the function key and F8 key and tapping the F11 on bootup worked fantastically! Thank you! I just figured that I would post to back up that guys solution. Kudos!

Its real annoying when people answer a simple question with the answer to a DIFFERENT question. What we want to know here is how to ENTER THE BIOS not HOW TO RESET THE CMOS INFORMATION or BOOT FROM DRIVE A. Did the people responding on this even bother to look at the title of the thread? If they did they would see "CANT ENTER BIOS" not "CAN'T FLASH BIOS". ***SO DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO ENTER THE BIOS ON A COMPAQ ARMADA 1750? ***(NOT HOW TO FLASH THE BIOS OR BOOT FROM A FLOPPY, WE KNOW THAT ONE).

This page may be of help if you can't enter the BIOS in the usual way:

http://home.earthlink.net/~xinilux/compaq/index.html#BIOS

The second paragraph of the "Update and Configure the BIOS" section is about this
problem. In short, you can get a boot floppy from the HP/Compaq site which gives
you access to the BIOS to make changes.

yes, yes! My armada 1750 had the same prob. compaq logo flashes and then nothing. This works! memory may need to be reset in bios. That was my problem.

I am having the same problem. Can't get into the 1700 bios. I've followed the Fn F8 F11 combo then F1 to save. Rebooted, then tried Fn... F10... F1.. and F2, nope... still can't get into the bios. Aaaaaaarg!! Does anyone know for sure?

HOW ON EARTH! I had WinXP running on it, wanted to install Linux, couldn't do so because I couldn't enter the BIOS. I ended up here and I did this: *Switched off computer *Held down FN key and pressed F11 continuously on bootup. *It gave me some weird info so I pressed F2 (Do not save changes) And from then I couldn't ever boot into WinXP again. How the hell do I go about fixing this now???

It works. I'm not sure what causes this because it does read parts of the hard drive. If you click F8 for advanced options it gives you that screen for XP or 2000, so some setting in the bios is causing it to not load. Never seen this problem before. I would like to not only thank Joe, but I would like to think the person that posted this question first, it saved me alot of time. Thanks alot! -Matt

HEY HEY LISTEN... IF YOU DONT HAVE AN FN KEY YOU HOLD THE KEY TO THE LEFT OF ALT WHICH LOOKS LIKE A FLYING WINDOW TO THE RIGHT OF CONTROL AND HIT F11. Ive been trying for so long reading through all this garbage and the FN probably works on laptops because they actually have the key so i said hey ill try holding the key that is in the same spot lol and it works DAMN NICE. i already had windows installed on my HD but i had to put it in this old compaq bc my computer crashed and as you know you cant run a hd with windows installed on other computers because of windows protection but now i can actually install windows on it with the DiSC DRIVE instead of the gay FLOPPY DRIVE. Thanks for the man who came up with the FN key. AWESOME

No. The boot order is controlled by the BIOS: you must enter the BIOS screen and set the boot sequence order there.

I have an Armada 1750, tried all the key combinations listed here, downloaded the program to make the boot disk from the Compaq site, Armada started to boot from the floppy, gave me a message in French that it was reading the floppy, then gave me an error message - in French again - that there was a problem and I should press enter, which took me back to the Compaq logo, so no joy. Tried this with two floppies in case the first was corrupted, but the same result. Anyone out there got any ideas?

To learn how to enter the BIOS / CMOS set-up screen on a Compaq computer, read this post.

Common keystrokes that will access the BIOS Setup in a Compaq are F1 , F2 , F10 , and Del .

Compaq computers rely (or used to, when I had one) on a special set of diagnostic tools that reside on a non-DOS diagnostic partition occupying Tracks 0 and 1 of the hard disk.

The same tools are (or used to be) supplied by Compaq on a special (bootable) floppy disk that Compaq supplied with the computer. The same tools could be downloaded from Compaq's website, and run to build the necessary floppy disk. All the user had to supply was one blank floppy for the tools to be installed on by the downloaded program.

Depending on the model of Compaq PC you own, look on their website for the diagnostic tools for that particular model.

The floppy disk (once formatted by the downloaded Compaq program) is used to boot the computer, and loads into memory the necessary tools to analyse the computer and (hopefully) to correct any faults.

However, if the computer won't boot at all I would tend to suspect a fault in the Master Boot Record (MBR) in sector CHS 0-0-1 which contains the partition table for the hard disk. To cure faults of this type, a first step is to read my posting here which will help you understand sector 0-0-1 and provides links to some tools you might be able to use to resolve the problem.

You will need a Windows ME emergency boot disk from here.

Ed

You can't. Pressing the F10 key during startup on a Compaq computer only accesses the Compaq diagnostics tools, which are on a special diagnostic partition of the disk. It's nothing to do with the BIOS.

In order to access the BIOS screen during startup on a Compaq PC you should instead press the key which Compaq has designated for that purpose. Unhelpfully, this varies from model to model. So consult your PC's instruction manual for details.

If you have lost the manual, it is back to trial and error. Try one of these keys: DEL, F1, F5, F8, F11, F12 (and on some models you also have to hold down the CTRL or ALT key simultaneously). If those don't do the trick, try the other F keys (one at a time).

I must say, I'm surprised. The Compaq Presario that I had in the old days displayed a message on-screen during POST:

     Press F2 to enter Setup

ok i know this is an old post. i bought an old armada 7770dmt months back at a yard
sale and was unable to access bios as i changed the hard drive. and it had only a
cd with no floppy. i was searchin high and low for help. this thread amused me. the
original question was never answered lol.

-
well here is the answer or at least my answer and this worked for me. 1st the web
site for the drivers and bios etc is dead links now. so there is no help there getting
setup program or bios updater. you can get the rompaq to update bios here:

ftp://compaq.com/ftp1/pub/softpaq/sp11001-11500/
the file you want for the 7770 is sp11375.exe

you can get the bios setup utiliy here:

ftp://compaq.com/ftp2/pub/softpaq/sp9501-10000/
the file for my 7770 is sp9962.exe

the same procedure worked for me to access bios and also to make the updater cd.
the procedure below will burn a bootable cd that emulates A drive. so when the box
boots it thinks its on A drive not a cd.

1: create boot floppy from the floppy creator. i was in xp
2: run winimage and read the floppy into winimage
3: save it as .ima
4: exit winimage
5: rename the .ima to .bin cdrwin wants it .bin
6: start cdrwin and use backup and file copy util in cdrwin
7: click on advanced at bottom and then create boot image tab
8: browse to .iso you made in winimage
9: you will have to add some files in cdrwin to burn the boot image. just anything
i used the archive files
10: when its done stick the cd in the laptop and boot from the cd. if laptop is
off ya will have to boot it into whatever system its running then reboot with cd
in. it didnt pick up cd for me trying to get cd in from cold boot.
11: thats it ya can setup bios features and update your bios from your cds.
-
both bios setup cd and the bios updater will autorun when they boot. nothing to it.
and for the bios updater there is a readme.txt in the ftp directory also might want
to snatch that also whilst your ftping. let me add a WARNING here if you have dead
battery and power goes off whilst your doing the bios update say goodbye to the laptop
lol. but it only takes about 2 mins for it to complete. my battery is good. or you
could plug the power supply into a computer UPS to feel safer. the bios update fixes
some really crappy things like y2k stuff and win2k wouldnt install till i did update.
-
now if you destroy your old wornout laptop doing the above im not to blame. both
procedures worked great for me with my 7770dmt.

and by the way it runs win2k fairly well with a 10gig drive and 144meg ram. not a
smoker but its ok for browsing in the front yard with a wireless card. sorry for
the long post but just trying to help the lost that are searching for clues lol.
have fun.

Happily, you were able to solve your particular problem (by building yourself a bootable CD to use in your PC's CD-ROM drive).

However, you implied that the reason why you could not access the BIOS was that you had removed the computer's hard drive. If you truly thought that, it's unclear why you didn't solve your problem by simply re-attaching the hard drive.

However, removing the hard drive could not have caused that problem. A computer will start up even with no hard drive present. For instance, it used to be common in the old days to have computers that *only* had a floppy drive!

Also, when building a new system it is always necessary to enter the BIOS first, to set up the system to recognise the hard disk which you are about to install.

The BIOS is entered by pressing the correct key(s) on the keyboard during the Power Up Self-Test (POST), *before* any disks are accessed. No hard disk or floppy disk is required to be attached.

The BIOS contains the stored settings which tell the computer what disks are on the system. So (for example) when installing a new hard disk during system recovery the first step is to press DEL - or whatever is the appropriate key - in order to enter the BIOS screen, for the purpose of auto-detecting the new disk.

If not DEL, the key to press is always one of the function keys (F1 to F12), sometimes in combination with the CTRL key or the ALT key.

Whatever other problems there may be, entering the BIOS during start-up does NOT require a bootable disk (nor any disk) to be present on the system. It is therefore straightforward to remove the old settings associated with the former (damaged) hard disk, as a first step.

With a damaged system, it will often be the case that you will be installing a brand new hard disk, not yet containing an operating system, one that will need partitioning and formating before an O/S can be installed on it from a bootable Windows installation CD or an OEM recovery CD.

The OEM system recovery CD supplied with most computers sold in the last 10 years will handle those steps for you, from the CD drive, without needing to boot from a floppy disk first. I actually have such an OEM recovery CD, supplied with my Win ME computer 8 years ago, and once had to use it to re-install Win ME on a replacement hard drive.

I've been fiddling with an old Compaq Armada 1750 laptop now for about a week. It had been formated which destroyed the diagnostics partition on the HDD. I searched the internet all over the place, found information and files here and there to the point where I now can set up the HDD with DIAGS partition (7Mb FAT) at the start of the disk and look at the BIOS, but there is a BIOS password to prevent access to saving settings. I have flashed the onboard BIOS ROM, set up the HDD and loaded Win98 with all necessary drivers etc and all the Compaq software. I can access anything EXCEPT the BIOS via f10 at boot to make changes. Damned password stops me. The boot setup floppy works fine, just cannot save settings back to BIOS. I've even disconnected the CMOS battery, allowed it to reset and re-done the DIAGS partition setup. Nothing allows me into the press f10 to get into BIOS because I don't know the password. Just access by floppy setup disk. This is really frustrating, but the laptop works fine so I'll just put Linux on it as the Compaq software is pointless without full access to BIOS. I get a conflict with the PCMCIA port and cannot resolve it via BIOS without saving the BIOS changes, so cannot get Win98 to run the wireless card. BTW, the Fn, F8, F11 key combo at boot just re-sets the BIOS to default settings and allows you to save or ignore the checksum condition it finds, but does nothing to remove the BIOS password. I tried a number of tiny Linux distros, so far DSL 4.4.10 runs best on it. Partition the HDD (without removing the DIAGS partition) to Ext2, also make a Linux swap partition at the end of the disk. I use 298Mb for it. You boot to the CD and then install to HDD. It will find the swap on re-boot to HDD. Using Lilo bootloader works best with it. It takes all of half an hour to be partitioned and running, whereas windows 98 can take you a week of stuffing around and it's not secure for the internet anyway:~) Partition magic pro does the job fantastic. Find it on Hirens boot cd 9.7

Ive had this 1750 for years in junk box. Now with this new info Hold down Function key and F8 then power up the computer keep these keys down and tap F11. You will then get an option to save changes F1. Worked. I was able to boot off XP pro and install. Had all drivers installed and working but too slow. Only 128 ram. So formated and installed XP Performance edition. Runs super. Had no drivers on this edition so had trouble with drivers missing. Dont support xp on 1750. So reinstalled full xp pro. Backed up drivers. Then formated and installed XP Performance edition. Now have a great working laptop with everything working. Rogers stick internet. Kids love it. Use it everyday. Having just backtracked through the entire message thread, I don't see anywhere in it that anyone suggested PIRACY as a valid option. There is no such thing as a legal "XP Performance Edition", as you should be well aware. That is a hacked copy of a copyrighted product.

You should be embarrassed with yourself for publicly admitting that you are a thief, and (TTBOMK) for breaking the forum's ToS while doing that, I'm sure.

Well are you kidding me. I have three legal Win xp pro and two of Xp home, 2 of 2000 and so fourth. All LEGAL. You make these slim down versions with your own versions of xp or what have you. You have to or you cant register it. There are many apps and other forums to help with this. Different versions can be made just for such reasons. I have an unopened win me but have not used it as the computer it was going to go into years ago suddenly got a case of the new higher OS upgrades.
