Question about 'Uninstalling Windows'

I have a question about Uninstalling Windows:

My laptop came with Windows ME preinstalled, and it's been no end of trouble - constant lockups and worse. I want to replace Windows ME with a copy of Win 98 (upgrade) that I have on hand. Since Win ME was preinstalled, it doesn't give me the option of uninstalling it. What is the least troublesome way to switch over? If possible I'd like to avoid re-installing (and re-customizing my Office 2000 and other software)

Strange that ME is not working for you, I've had Me for a year and it has work great. Anyway I don't think you will be able to do the "upgrade" (actually downgrade) to win 98 because if I am correct as you put it in the cd drive it will say that your operating system is newer than the one you want to install. You can back up all you files and do clean install of 98, or better yet, go out a buy the upgrade XP home edition and do a real upgrade, this upgrade will delete ME, keep all your current files and install the latest OS today. But before you buy check to see if your software/ hardware is XP compatible. Good luck.

Ok...so how do you do a 'clean install' of windows 98?...I to have some programs that will only work on 98 and not ME. I don't know how to do a 'clean install' tho.

Try getting a copy of windows 2000 pro and running the set up.Let it format and when it is done formatting and trys to reboot, remove the 2000pro cd and install your win98 cd or boot disk. Then install your operating system. It should work just fine.

Downgrading to Win98 isnt an option I'm afraid. Re-install Win98 from CD by doing the following: Create an ERD Floppy (emergency recovery disk) in Windows ME - see help for instuctions on how to do this. From what I remember its an option under start\remove programs - windows components - create ERD disk. Once the floppy is created restart the machine and boot from it. In DOS prompt either format your partition using format c: /q or run the command FDISK to remove\recreate the partition on the drive. Doing so will ERASE all your data. Reboot the PC and again, boot back into the ERD floppy. Select CD Driver Support and in dos prompt select your CD drive (ie: D: or E:). Then type dir to list the contents of the CD. Run setup.exe (or similiar - cant remember the exact setup command for Win98). Follow onscreen instructions! Good Luck
