In Windows ME, to get rid of the speaker icon, follow the instructions as shown here,
BUT, on the SOUNDS tab, UNcheck the box that says "Show Volume Control on the Task
Bar".
First off go to Control Panel via
Start -> Settings ->Control Panel.
In Control Panel double click the "Sounds and MultiMedia" icon.
In the "S and M" properties window, uncheck the box the reads "Show volume control
in the taskbar".
That is it, the icon should disapear forever, (or untill you bring it back) no reboot
required or anything like that.
