I have a question about Get Rid of Irritating Splash Screens:

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the splash screen of Zone Alarm that comes up when windows starts? I've tried everything I can think of and can't get rid of it. Thanks!

Hi Dori, What you request is simple: First: click Start/Run/ then type "msconfig", click OK, The System configuration utility will pop up. Click "Selective Startup...", then click the Startup tab. go down the list of programs w/checks next to them, find "TrueVector", "Minilog", and "Zonealarm", uncheck those three items, then click Apply, then OK, the computer will prompt you to restart. Click Yes and reboot. When you reboot, you will get a pop up box saying "you are using the System Configuration Utility for troubleshooting your system". Put a check next to "Don't show this dialog again", then click OK. You can start zonealarm by going to Start/Programs/Zonealarm ...hope it helps! Skoob

Hi Skoob, Thanks so much! I unchecked those, but only one at a time. lol. I'll uncheck them all at once. Do you know if there's any way to make zone alarm come on at startup without the splash screen? Or is that asking too much? lol. Thanks again! Dori

Hi Dori, In fact, there is a simpler way to disable the Splash Screen: Open up ZoneAlarm, click on "configure", then uncheck "Load ZoneAlarm at Startup". The bad part is, you'll still have to turn ZA on by going to Start/Programs. Glad I could help. If you have any other questions, feel free to post here or e-mail. Skoob

Dori, You could try this :- If you want ZoneAlarm to load up as normal at start-up but without the splash screen, navigate your way to the Windows folder. Then, All Users; Start Menu; Programs; Start Up; ZoneAlarm. Right click ZA icon. Properties; Shortcut tab; then type after the target -nopopup -nosplash. OK. then close window. VOILA !! Hope this helps.

WOW!! Thanks a lot Frank (and Dori, too). For such a simple task, disabling the splash
is certainly a time and stress saver!

I'm not sure, but appending the -nopopup -nosplash parameters can also be applied
to many other--if not all--programs that have a splash screen! I tried this trick
out on my free antivirus software, Antivir Personal Edition, and it worked!

I'd like to add a useful tip or two to this post.

1) When modifying a shortcut that's in the startup folder (ex: Zonalarm), I noticed
that the -nopopup -nosplash parameters are appended outside the parentheses that
enclose the full path to the program. For example:
 "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs
   \ZoneAlarm\zonealarm.exe" -nopopup -nosplash

2) This little trick is not limited to shortcuts in the startup folder (which can
also be accessed simply by selecting Start, Programs, Startup). For example, programs
that use a registry entry to automatically start can be tweaked as well. Typically,
these program's will have an entry in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
section. By using regedit, you can modify this key by appending the -nopopup -nosplash
parameters. But, as usual, if you're going to manually edit something in the registry,
be careful. ;-)

Once again, thanks ppl.

I tried this, but it doesn't help, I still get zonealarm's annoying pop-up on start-up :(. I don't have it in my startup folder, so I had to go through regedit. Is there another technique that might work? Thanks!! Amaury
