Question about 'Clear Unwanted Entries from Add/Remove Programs'
Friday, January 25, 2002 at 8:01 am Posted by Cheri
(1 messages posted)
I downloaded Bonzi Buddy for free, just after I did that I could not open some of
my folders on my desktop. I decided to remove Bonzi Buddy so I opened the control
panel and followed the instructions. It removed some files but he is still here!
I tried to uninstall again and I keep getting a box that says "Could not open Install.Log
file". Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try next?

I can see three options. Others may see more in addition:
1. Reinstall the programme from the Internet. Then make a copy of the folders produced
so that, should the same thing happen again, you have a backup of them. Then try
uninstall again. You could also see if the programme has its own uninstall facility:
look in its help section under uninstall. Otherwise do a Windows search for: unin*.lnk
and see if one of the resulting shortcuts found relates to the programme you want
to uninstall. If so, double click it in the search pane and you should get rid of
that b****y monkey once and for all!
2. If the uninstall hangs again, you can always manually delete the programme folder,
but then yo0u ought to edit the registry or you might get further problems (run -
'regedit' - return) in order to remove every mention of the programme from your PC
- but you have to be thorough and very careful of course - AND you must make a back-up
of the registry (file - export) first. I've obviously no idea if you know about editing
the registry or not - if not, I'd not recommend this method as you could delete something
vital! It could take an hour as well!
3. If you have Norton Utilities or similar, set the install monitor running before
you reinstall Bonzi - you can then use the Utilities programme to uninstall it.
Hope this is of some use. If any of it doesn't make sense feel free to e-mail me.

Hi Cheri,
Unfortunately Bonzi Buddy is spyware which is sometimes difficult to uninstall
completely. Here is a site that may be of help:
http://www.pchell.com/support/bonzibuddy.shtml
You can find other sites by opening Google.com and searching for "bonzi buddy
spyware".
After you have uninstalled you may want to make sure you have no residual spyware
on your system. There is a free product called Ad-Aware which will scan your system
and remove every trace of this insidious software. You can download it here:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
The spyware problem is covered quite thoroughly by Steve Gibson on his web site:
http://grc.com/

Ron

be sure nothing was hanging out there I did this:
Click on start;click on run;type msconfig and click; click start up tab; uncheck
any row that has "C:\Program files\bonzi buddy or any bonzi what so ever! (I didn't

Yeah, unfortunately, I did just that: I got Ad-Aware to remove spyware, and guess
what! I get a message that says "Cannot open install.log" when I try to uninstall
ad-aware now.
At least we know ad-aware isn't malicious, but I don't want it anymore, and I can't
automatically uninstall it. Oh, well... a program called system mechanic will clear
the registry of outdated keys, and I've never had it screw my system up...ever.

Hi Morgrum,
It sounds like INSTALL.LOG is either missing or corrupted. You could check the
Lavasoft folder and if you find INSTALL.LOG there attempt to open it with Notepad.
The file should contain a list of the installation actions such as "File Copy", "Shell
Link", "RegDB Root", etc.
You could reinstall Ad-Aware in the same default folder and then evoke the uninstaller
again.
You didn't say why you want to eliminate Ad-Aware from your system. Its a handy
utility to check your system from time to time to make sure you haven't inadvertently
acquired a new spy. If your reason for removal is because of the Ad-Watch feature
which runs every time you start, that action can be disabled in the Options>Preference
by unchecking "Autostart Adwatch".

Ron

No real reason...I just try to keep installed apps to a minimum to avoid crashes.
I keep archives and reinstall programs when I want to use them, then take them off
again... haha.. it probly causes more problems than just leaving them on all the
time... oh well.

Find the link to the Windows bug here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q191211
I had the same problem with CoffeeCup FTP Free. I copied the INSTALL.LOG file to
C:\, then modified the uninstall link in the registry (see the support page above)
to 1. read "program files" instead of progra~1, and 2. point to C:\install.log instead
of program files\...\install.log. It's gone now.

Was looking at your response. I have a new cd writer whose program Nero conflicts
with a "ghost" file from an uninstalled Adaptec Easy Creator program.I used a program
from PCWorld, called CleanReg3 which wa supposed to reveal any registry settings
of that file. thought i got all of it.Apparently not. I've never worked with Regedit,
and wonder if this is the time to do so. If so, what is the way to do it?

To solve all "cannot open INSTALL.LOG" file errors:
Open a command prompt in the offending program's directory
Almost allways there will be two files there:
UnWise.exe and INSTALL.LOG
Type
UnWise.exe INSTALL.LOG
Hey presto, the unistaller starts to work!

I've had this problem in the past & actually had it tonight also, some of the answers
here got me thinking - so heres what I tried (& it worked).
1.Create a blank text document in the folder containing the uninstaller (unwise.exe
in our example) & the install.log.
2. In the blank text document type the name of the uninstaller (here unwise.exe)
leave a space & then type install.log.
( so in this example i've typed unwise.exe install.log)
3. save this tsxt document as 'uninstall.bat'
4. doubleclick this simple .bat file to run it & it will launch the uninstaller.
can't believe it took me this long to think of this solution.

Like Amy, I didn't know how to open the command prompt. So I went to Windows XP
"Help," and typed "open command prompt." Windows' answer: "To open a command prompt,
click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command
Prompt." After the black screen pops up, type "Help," and it will list a bunch of
commands and what they do. Type "CHDIR [name of directory in which problem program
resides]" EXAMPLE: In my case, the problem program was System Mechanic 5, so I
typed "CHDIR C:/Program Files/System Mechanic 5." Hit enter. Then follow "Allan's"
March 12, 2005 instructions. Like he said, "Presto" -- problem solved. (Though
it's likely that "Allan" will never see this message -- thank you very much, sir.
I searched the net every way I knew how, and you alone provided the solution.)

There is a bug with the WISE installation program and 95% of the programs installed
on a Windows XP machine will not uninstall.
Funny enough, Lavasoft uses the buggy WISE installer.
See: http://www.wise.com/KBArticle.aspx?articleno=1604&keywords=open+install.log
Of course, that will not let you get the programs uninstalled. You can remove the
program folders and cause it to disappear from the Add/Remove program's list, but
any registry keys created by the program will be orphaned. As a result, I personally
no longer install programs which use WISE.
I have heard, but havn't confirmed that enabling the 8.3 file name support in Windows
XP (Microsoft says it wastes resources) will allow the WISE installation and uninstalation
to work correctly.
FWIW,
Rod

Open the "C:\Program Files" directory, and find in it the sub-directory in which
you installed the program that you want to remove. This will probably be the latest
sub-directory by date, so click on the date column (headed "Modified") to sort the
sub-directories by date.
That sub-directory will normally include an uninstall file. You can double-click
it to start the uninstall process manually. This type of file usually has
a name something like UNWISE.exe or UNINS000.exe (or some such).
If the above suggestion doesn't work, try installing the program again, and then
trying again to uninstall it (using the "Add/Remove Program" function). A re-install
might cure whatever fault in the original installation has initially prevented you
from uninstalling.
If the above suggestions don't work, you could manually delete the sub-directory
of "C:\Program Files" which contains the program you wish to remove, then manually
delete the shortcuts to that program, then clean your Windows Registry (to remove
the references to that program) using a registry cleaner such as Registry Clean Expert.
