Question about 'Do I still need CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT?'

I have a question about Do
I still need CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT?:
I'm having problems when I open a DOS window, that my keyboard isn't mapped correctly
(for example the @ symbol prints as an inverted comma). Under DOS, this used to be
handled by loading code pages and using country.sys and keyboard.sys - and was relatively
simple to fix - but I can't find a fix under Windows ME. The keyboard and country
settings are correct in Control Panel and everything works fine in a Windows program,
but not when I open a DOS window. Any ideas, anyone?

Just some information for anyone who is having this problem.... The solution is VERY
obscure but I found it in the end and it goes as follows:-
Open a DOS window and type MSCONFIG. The System Configuration Utility should start.
If it doesn't, change directory to "C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND" and try again. Once the SCU
is open, select the "International" tab and select your appropriate language setting.
After the various fields have been filled in, look at the one named "Keyboard Data
File Name". No matter what it says in this field, delete the entry and simply type
"keyboard.sys" (omitting the quotation marks). DON'T type in any specific path name.
Re-start your computer and bingo!
I believe that this problem only affects Windows ME, but feel free to correct me
if you encounter it on another OS.

In my case, I found I had to go to c:\windows\system before typing msconfig. However,
this worked. Thank you JohnE, yours is the only helpo I have found.

I'm running on windows 98 se,
i also need my date format to to british at the dos prompt but i can't seem to find
out how to do this.
The msconfig must be different in ME as i don't have a "international" tab in my
98'.
I tried adding COUNTRY=44 in my config.sys but i just got a config.sys error message
on boot up.
Can anyone help?
Thanx in advance,
Ben.
