Hi Robert; There is a known bug in Windows ME that may be the cause of your problem. Modern computers today run so fast that Windows ME may not have time to write important information to the hard disk before the computer shuts down. As a result this constitutes a improper shut down and causes Windows ME to run scan disk each time you boot. The message below was copied from the Microsoft Web site and explains the problem further. There is a patch you can download to fix this this problem. This patch introduces a 2 second delay in the shutdown process to allow enough time for the Hard Drive to save all important information. This patch may solve your problem. To get the patch choose start and then Windows Update. This will take you to the Microsoft Web Site. The web site will scan your system and tell you what patches are appropriate for your system. The one I describe will be in the list. Hope this helps. Good Luck Mike The Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package provides a workaround for computers running Windows Millennium with Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard drives, large caches, and modern processors. IDE hard drives store data in a hardware cache (temporary memory) and write the data to the hard disk later. For these computers, data can be lost during the shutdown process because the amount of time that it takes for fast processors to shut down is so short that the hard disk may shut down before the data in the cache is written to the hard drive. This update introduces a two second delay in the shutdown process, which allows the hard drive's cache to write any data to the hard drive. Download now to delay your shutdown process slightly to prevent data loss.

So how do you DISABLE the damn scandisk on boot, so it can't run no matter what sort of a mess the HDD is in? Microsoft went to the trouble of including a check box on the screen so it wont run automatically, but this is always greyed out. (So it cannot be unchecked) WinBoost 98 had a feature to stop this happening, but of course you need WinBoostMe for this one, which I do not have. I even moved the scandisk program to another directory, but Windows still somehow manages to find it. (or it runs scandisk from somewhere else) This auto scandisk is the biggest pain on WinME because it hangs about 50% of the time. (At least it does on the 4 machines I have running WinME) This percentage of course means that now and again you have to reboot a few times to restore your system. While I'm at it, here is my list of Windows9X, Me, XP's worst features - Disk Cache goes overboard unless it's capped - Swapfile can take the whole C: drive unless capped - System Restore is useless and wastes hundreds of meg of HDD space - You uncheck the default to install online services (AOL etc) and yet they install anyway - System Monitor is not a default install option - Commonly used items such as notepad, calculator, etc are tucked away behind several menus While there are fixes for all these, and work arounds etc, it requires extra time for each OS install. For me this is about once a month with four P.C.s'. Thankyou Bill Gates for an Operating System which is a piece of crap. -------------------------------------------------------

Well, edit your MSDOS.SYS file that is hidden in
the root directory. Under [options] change
(or add) AutoScan to be equal to 0. In other
words

[Options]
AutoScan=0

I think 1 causes it to run whenever needed and
prompts the user, and I think 2 just runs it when
needed with no confirmation. That is how it is set
on mine. Plus I have the cache fix installed.

As for the "Online Services," I am tired of them
getting added all the time too. Everytime you
change your browser, they may come back. I
have deleted the files by hand before and hand
edited the registry to remove all entries that
contain AOL and AIM. I don't see why every
browser you install assumes you want WinAmp
either. I'd rather use Yahoo!'s player. It is
simpler to use.

                                                    Courtney

First either load a DOS prompt and go to C:\ or go to My Computer and then to C:\. In Windows, right click on MSDOS.SYS and go to properties and untag the attributes (mainly read only). In DOS, do ATTRIB -R -H -S MSDOS.SYS Then you can use notepad in Windows or EDIT in DOS to edit the file. (Yes, it is a plain text file, unlike the older MSDOS.SYS files which were part of the OS kernel and contained machine code).

Once you remove the attributes, you must then edit the file. Under [Options], change the value of AutoScan to 0. [Options] AutoScan=0

Hello. The AutoScan=0 seemed like a great tip. Unfortunately, it did not work for me. Win M.E. (Multiple Errors) is still running scandisk automatically at startup. Its also running a thorough scan everytime and freezes up often. I have all updates and the laptop is a 400mhz (hardly fast enough to cause shutdown errors). When I shutdown, it powers down and shuts off properly. This problem just started two days ago. Any suggestions? Geo D

RE: Scandisk starts when booting system (Windows 98 Second Edition)

That Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package is a bad thing to install! The microsoft site recommends installing this to prevent a problem that doesn't actually exist UNTIL that is installed. I wish I hadn't done it now. It has caused scandisk to auto-start at boot, and saying that there might be "bad sectors" on the disk. This wasn't happening before that package was installed. Does anyone know how to prevent Scandisk from doing that please? I have Windows 98 Second Edition. PLEASE HELP!

Phew! I've fixed it. I let Scandisk complete its task and now it's back to normal again.

If you find that your computer doesn't suffer any maladies after a forced shutdown,
and nothing is reported as being wrong after ScanDisk autoruns, and you want to stop
the automatic scanning, you have two options to prevent ScanDisk from automatically
starting:
1. On the toolbar click Start, click Run, type Msconfig, and then click OK.
2. Click Advanced, and select the Disable ScanDisk after bad shutdown option.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes to restart your computer.

NOTE: For Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition, this procedure adds AutoScan=0
to the [Options] section of the Msdos.sys file (a hidden, read-only, system file).
For Windows Me, this procedure adds a Binary value named DisableScanDiskOnBoot to
the following registry key and sets its value to 01: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
