about 50% of the time when i startup my computer (advent 6417 laptop), it gives me
an error msg to say spool32 has caused an error with spool32.exe, this freezes the
computer, ctrl alt deln lets me end explorer(not responding) and a couple of other
things sometimes but still freezes computer and sometimes won't even let me shut
it down from there or the task bar, please help it is driving me crazy

What o/s are you using?
Try going to:
http://support.microsoft.com
and look for article number Q191949; it may help.
If it doesn't, go into Start/settings/printers. Right click your printer and choose
'Properties'. Switch to the 'Details' tab and click 'Spool settings'. Click 'Print
Directly to the Printer' and make sure 'RAW' is selected in 'Spool Data Format'.
Click OK to exit. If you still have a problem after this, try reinstalling your printer
driver - instructions for this at:

I've had this problem on two Win98SE machines. Apparently this happens
because something else has either already loaded, or is in the process of
loading, that interferes with the loading of spool32.exe. I've resolved it
on both machines by making the first line of Win.ini, in [windows]:
load=c:\windows\system\spool32.exe
This has also worked on WinME.
