Can I delete _RESTORE ?

There's a "_RESTORE" directory in my C: root. It has 4 small files in it, taking 60K. But in its properties window it says 1350 files taking more than 1GB... I want to delete the directory but I'm not sure that's safe. Anyone knows? Thanks

The _RESTORE directory is a PROTECTED directory with Windows ME, to keep people from deleting it. It is REQUIRED. It is where the System Restore function keeps all the backups necessary to restore your system back to a prior state if you mess it up. Maybe you should read through the HELP section on features of ME before you go trying to delete ME off of your system.

You can disable the Restore function if you do not want it under the troubleshooting options, but the _RESTORE directroy is still required, and Windows will put it back if you some how manage to delete it.

If there is a discrepancy in the file sizes between
what is shown on the disk and what the properties
shows, you may want to run a disk repair program
(ScanDisk or Norton Disk Doctor) to see if there
are any disk errors.

I haven't read all the reposnses, but you AN delte de files in the TEMP directory. Those are the ones taking up all the space. Diable the restore function first (under File System). Reboot and start up in protected mode and delete away. If you are one of the people that can not do it in portected mode, use your start disk to boot up is DOS. Don't forget the the directory is _restore/temp

My "_RESTORE" folder was 20GB, half of my hard disc. You can safely turn off and delete the _restore folder following these steps:

1. right click my computer select "Properties"
2. click the "Performance" tab and select "File System"
3. click the "Troubleshooting" tab and the last option is to disable "System Restore" which will delete the _restore folder on restart

you can always reactivate _restore using the same pocedure if you think your system is ever going to the wall, but there seems to be more problems with _restore than benifits

Cleaning the _Restore folder on Windows Me

Windows Me System Restore function is a sort of back-up functionality
built into Windows Me.

This function backs up of certain files from your system to the _RESTORE
folder. This means that Windows Me
can also back-up infected files to the _RESTORE folder. As this folder
is protected by a special write protection,
Norman Virus Control cannot repair nor delete infected files in this
folder.

To completely remove the infected file or files in the _RESTORE folder,
disable and re-enable the System Restore
             feature by following this procedure:

1.Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2.Double-click System, and then click the Performance tab.
3.Click File System button, and then click the Troubleshooting tab.
4.Select the Disable System Restore check box, click Apply and Close.
5.Restart the computer when you are prompted to do so. When the computer
restarts, the Restore Utility will
                  be disabled.
6.Perform a scan with Norman Virus Control. Remove all files Norman
Virus Control reports as infected from
                  the the _RESTORE directory.
7.To enable the System restore function, repeat steps 1-5 above,
but remove the check mark next to Disable
                  System Restore.
8.After a restart restart of the computer the Restore Utility will
be enabled.

Hello, Guys! In my humble opinion. You can remove the files from the _Restore folder by Reseting the Data store. When you reset the data store, the contents of the _Restore folder are emptied, and all previous restore points and log files are removed. To reset the data store, turn off System Restore, restart your computer, and then turn on System Restore. This should serve your purpose.

Well, yes and no The only way to delete this folder is by having a DOS / Win9x /WinME boot disk with the program deltree on it. From within windows it is not possible to delete the _Restore folder(s)

How do you "Reset the Data Store"?
I have hundreds of C:/_RESTORE/ARCHIVE and TEMP CPY and CAB files, 15 meg each, eating
up several gig.

Thanks.

The answer is "yes". I deleted it without incident. Also, I was able to upgrade WinME to Win2000Pro without incident and it was only later that I saw MS' site saying upgrading from WinME to Win2K was not possible. Did something change during WinME service packs that made this possible? Anyway, Win2k runs beautifully on my Toshiba 2805-201s.

I have found the answer on how to delete the _restore virus. What you have to do first is to insert a bootable diskette and restart your computer. When the restart finish type dir/a/p/o/w you will see the _restore folder in the list. Type cd _restore then press on enter. Type dir/a then press on enter, you will see a list of folders and files. Type cd Temp then press enter. then type dir/o/p/w/a to view all the files in this folder. Type del *.* then press enter. All the files should be deleted. Then exit this forlder by typing cd.. Now start by deleting everything under _restore folder by using the command deltree for deleting the folders and del for deleting the files. At the final stage type cd.. to get back to the root c:\ then type deltree _restore and press enter to remove this folder. Now remove the bootable diskette and restart your computer. Congratulation this virus is removed.

There is no discrepancy here. You are just not able to view the system files. If
you go to folder properties in windows explorer you will find a toggle to view system
files. It will likely give you a warning about turning it on. And rightly so, you
don't want to be moving these files around or deleting them although most of them
are protected. You will see all the files that account for the 1 gig, no doubt you
will see a lot of files. Now that seems like an awful lot. Some of them are old.
The are some file clean up programs that will purge old restore files. You may reduce
that 1 gig to half easily. Now my memory might not be right here but go to http://download.com
and search for easycleaner. It should be free, try it.

I am looking for a way to delete the files in _restore so I can't help you there.

Cheers'

Andy

Dear Hawk, You are THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks a lot, I discovered this 6 Gb whale of a folder while wandering one day.....since the files were compressed by WinRAR freeware, I figured it was some archive setting or spyware...so I deleted WinRAR (saved backup so no prob). When the #%$# whale kept getting bigger, I knew that wasn't it. next suspect was Norton......but noooooooooooooo... Your simple method worked perfectly! Now my question is what idiot drempt this whale up??? Don't they realize what it is going to do over time?????? Thanks again!!! Joe

Ok, I've read all replies but nobody seems to run into my problem while correcting the _restore bug. The popular choice tells you to disable the restore feature, reboot, and enjoy. My restore feature, however, is already disabled--yet it continues to take up my space. I can't use the slider to adjust how much space it uses either because it is still 'disabled'. When I un-check the box to able myself to adjust the slider, it simply re-checks itself on startup. Any thoughts? Thanks--I'm ready for my 6 gigs back

I'm experiencing EXACTLY the same thing you are. I hope we get some help! The content of my _RESTORE dir. The only subdirs that contain any files are LOGS and ARCHIVE. ARCHIVE seems to contain files dating back all the way since I obtained the computer in yr 2001. There are over 1100 files in there now and the latest one is dated TODAY! The LOGS directory only contains "vxdalt1.log" and "vxdsfp.log" but they are both 1025 kb each and dated TODAY. I had DISABLED the Restore feature over a year ago assuming that the SysRestore file accumulation issue was put to rest.

Okay...I had the same problem as you...and the solution almost seems a little too easy...but it worked for me and hopefully it will work for you too...this is what I did: If your computer was like mine and the "disable system restore" box was checked and yet you were still unable to delete the C:\_restore file simply: -Uncheck the box and click "apply" -ReCheck the box after applying the unchecked box, and hit "apply" again. -When you exit the window, it will ask you to restart. Do so. -After restarting, you should be able to simply right-click and delete the file without the system reporting that "the file is currently in use" This is what worked for me...Maybe I did something else...I dont know...but its worth a try.

REAL SOLUTION When you disabled restore it keeps saying "...cannot delete ... blablabla". To delete _restore folder in Windows you also need to disable *StateMgr from ME startup. Run msconfig and uncheck it from the startup list. Reboot and you can delete _RESTORE folder! Babypc

It works - thanks for several messages to this item. I just got back about 4.7 GB of my 15 GB partition. ... Now I will observe the growing _restore-dir and if it will become large again, I will also disable the *StateMgr from ME startup. This was much more than just a "useful message" - wilfried

My computer has a virus and it has infected almost every file in my _Restore folder. I decided to delete it. I did what you guys told me to do.. i started to delete the folder.. then it told me a file could not be found and stopped deleting the rest of the files. Then I did the pc start up disk method.. well actually i just entered dos mode, and then i wrote that... then it said: Delete directory "_RESTORE" and all of all of his subdirectories [yn].. i typed y and then it said Deleting _RESTORE... Then about a second later the c: prompt re-appears. I cannot run Norton Antivirus.. i double click on the icon and it will not start.. I ran a scandisk through the website and it told me i have viruses in the _RESTORE folder.. can someone please help.

You can delete _Restore folder permanently !

You can delete the C:\ _Restore folder permanently. 1. Disable System Restore (procedure has already been discussed), restart system. 2. click on Start > Run , type msconfig. In the startup tab, uncheck StateMgr , restart system 3. Intall the "290700usam.exe" patch from Microsoft's site. http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290700 4. right click on restore folder and it should be gone forever !!!!

The unique way to delete _Restore

This is the only way that i know, don't bother to find another one. First boot from your boot diskette and then remove the attribs from c:\_restore with this command attrib -r -s -h c:\_restore Then use this command deltree c:_restore and sit back and wait some minutes, about 30 on my PC. Some moment it will be gone and then you can relax. You will see it again next time you reboot but you can delete it from windows this time. Just with right click. It works for me, i hope it works for you too. 'cause disabling it or shrinking the size of the folder doesn't work.

I have Linux and Windows iME installed (dual boot) I'm pretty sure I can delete _Restore using Linux -- logged in as root, Linux doesn't much care about whether Windows hides files or makes then undeletable! And thanks for this discussion. I had backed up my entire system using Linux, and recently had the occasion to restore it. I now have two copies of _Restore for each partition -- one that Windows made me and one from the backup -- and I was wondering which one to use. I thing we need the backed-up one, but perhaps it is safer to delete all.

Definitive, definitive, final all encompassing solution

Well after reading all the tips you guys left here I have a final solution:

1. Right click My Computer

2. Select properties

3. Click the Performance tab

4. Click the File System button

5. Click the Troubleshooting tab

6. Check Disable System Restore. If it is already checked then uncheck it, click Apply, check it again, click Apply again.

7. Click OK twice but choose NO when it asks you to reboot

8. Type msconfig in the run box. Click the Startup tab. If there is an entry for StateMgr then it must be removed. Go to step 9 to remove entry. Otherwise go to step 15

9. Type regedit in the run box.

10. Go to the root node (my computer) and hit CTRL-F. Type statemgr in the Find What box (look in keys, values and data. Uncheck match whole string only).

11. Click the Find Next button.

12. You should find a key in the RunServices folder (mine was [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices])

13. Find the *StateMgr entry and delete it. DO NOT DELETE THE WHOLE RunServices folder, ONLY DELETE THE *StateMgr ENTRY. This will prevent StateMgr from starting up and creating a new _RESTORE folder all over again.

14. Close regedit

15. Reboot your machine

16. Right click on the _Restore folder and delete it. Delete it from the recycle bin if it went there.

17. Marvel at how much hard drive space you've managed to steal back from Bill Gates.

Yes, I forgot about that. As an advanced user, I have all such warnings removed and all files shown. I forget that others don't have theirs set up such a way. But it still does not hurt to run a disk scanner when you suspect something weird.

THE SOLUTION IS HERE ! I tried and searched, none of the above solutions worked for 100% ; this one deletes the file and it's no big job : Start Run, than type "regedit" ; go to Edit -> find and type _RESTORE ; It'll find them ; just delete the selected keys, press F3 and normally he"ll find no more of those ; exit and restart your computer ; go to the C directory and there delete the _RESTORE file, now it is possible and you are rid of it ! This WORKS! Thank you so much, I was starting to pull my hair out! This worked with downloader.delf.5.av (aka delf-5, delf.5) trojan horse

On a windows ME AVG Anti-Virus found the file but could not do anything with it. I tried to find it via search but it is a hidden file so I had to go into windows me file folder>tools>folder options>view>"Hidden files and folders" select "show hidden files and folders" I then found the file that avg had described to me (*****.cpy (yours will be different since this name (a number) is made up by your computer for a restore point)) and found it. I didn't delete the whole _restore file because I wanted my other restore points just in case. It did not let me delete it, and I even went so far as to try to take a non offending .cpy next to it, copy it, rename it with the offending file name on the desktop and then try to overwrite it) So I had to get the boot disk, restart, and follow these directions.) I restarted and AVG didn't find the file and I could not find it either. Thank you again! Steve Thanks again.

the proper way to get rid of system restore and still be able to restore the function
is at this page. you might need the fuction say when using windows update and you
get those results windows could not upgrade the file1%2%,etc.

http://www.emulators.com/secrets.htm#KILLSYSREST

from his page ;

"How to shut off this ridiculous System Restore "feature"? Well, this was the kicker.
You can't simply delete the backed up files because the entire _RESTORE directory
is marked as "in use" and thus can't be deleted. And since Microsoft removed the
"Exit to DOS" feature, one can't just exit Windows to a DOS prompt like before. While
there is an obscure "Disable System Restore" option buried away in the System control
panel applet, interestingly enough under the "Performance - File System - Troubleshooting"
tab, that still doesn't help with all the wasted hard disk space.

So here is my brute force solution to shut off and remove all traces of System Restore:

In Control Panels, Add/Remove Programs, create a Windows boot disk. It's really an
MS-DOS boot disk.

Shut down Windows and reboot the PC from the floppy disk.

Type SMARTDRV 8192 to install an 8 megabyte disk cache (it will speed up the file
deletion)

Go the C: prompt by typing C:

Type "C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DELTREE C:\_RESTORE" to remove all the System Restore files.

Create a bogus file called _RESTORE by, for example, running EDIT and creating a
blank text file.

Type "C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ATTRIB +r +s +h _RESTORE" to hide this file. This will prevent
Windows from re-creating its hidden directory.

Now reboot the PC and watch Windows Millennium run much faster!"

Good stuff! I have disabled System Restore and deleted StateMgr from the Registry. At least now the monster is not being updated. I have backed up the _RESTORE folder to an external hard disk just in case. So I am at step 16 and cannot get to 17. All attempts to delete the folder or individual files lead to an "Access Denied" message. I have tried the SHIFT+DELETE METHOD to bypass the Recycle Bin. I have gone in MS-DOS trying del *.* in the Archive folder and rd /s /q [file path] but still Access Denied. As an additional note, _RESTORE is a hidden file which I have allowed to be viewed but I cannot change the status by unchecking the hidden option...still access denied. Any ideas? I have seen this same issue on another web-site, without conclusion. Cheers.

I don't understand what to do about the "bootable disk". Can I use a CD that came with my computer? Any help would be great.

Go to this computer/configuration screen / software

chose the last tab there, and press "make a diskette" (or something like that, my
windows isn't english.)
Insert a blank diskette, and wait.
Once you've created the diskette, reboot while the diskette is in your computer.
You'll see a little menu then.
pres shift + F5
then type c:\_restore
type del *.*

that should do the trick

Just came across this problem on a friend's computer. Checked the internet and found this site provided by Symantic. It shows you how to empty the _Restore folder and then re-enable it. Good luck! http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000092513515106?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=1#_Section1

re: Can I delete _RESTORE ? UNIQUE PROBLEM HERE

I had exactly this same problem. System Restore had maxed out at 66% of my tiny 4GiG hard drive, and I had uninstalled everything but my browser and email program to increase my disk space so I could still get online to search for answers. System Restore didn't work in any way way. After reading all the possibilities here, I took courage and went into Start/Search/Files and Folders and typed _RESTORE and clicked Search Now. The _RESTORE folder was the only one that came up. I clicked on it and hit the delete button. It took almost 20 minutes for the file to empty, too much for the recycle bin, so I sent it into permanent delete. I rebooted as I held my breath to see if I still had a computer and all came back except for my Outlook Express in which a MSOE.DLL wouldn't load to open it. I did a re-install of IEsetup, which fixed my OE in short order. My System Restore is still "broken" and the _RESTORE file never reappeared on my computer. My computer has sped up considerably again and I am happy, Happy, HAPPY!!! I have reinstalled all the programs I had previously and added a few and still have half my hard drive free. Coral

you can delet your _restore folder go to run and type regedit go [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VxDMon] and chang this path "c:" TO D:\ or E:\ and restart system and you can del _restore "StaticVxD"="*VxDMon" "LogDir"="c:\\_RESTORE\\LOGS" "TempDir"="c:\\_RESTORE\\TEMP" "VxdDat"="C:\\_RESTORE\\VxDMon.dat" "VxdCfg"="C:\\_RESTORE\\VxDMon.cfg" "SystemFileProtection"="Y" "SystemRestore"="Y" "FirstRun"="N"

Making a bootable disk is needed b/c you can't remove the RESTORE (or the RECYCLER) virus from within windoze since the virus is still running and will re-download and reinstall whatever parts of itself your delete. The only way to remove it is from another OS. Offcourse you might as well want to download a linux liveCD (There are windoze LiveCD's, but asking about where to get one or telling about where to get one is illegal due the the DMCA, so the linux ones are about the only CD based recovery solutions that are legal to obtain) and use it to remove the virus, the upshot is that you get lots more (and more powerful) utilities than what you can normally fit in a floppy, plus a fully working graphical desktop environment which enables you to surf (even search solutions online), play, make documents, pretty much anything you normally do in windoze, while repairing the windoze OS or in the worst case, placing them in external storage. Also remember that CD's are more reliable than floppies.

That _RESTORE IS NOT from winME's system restore. It's part of the RESTORE virus that transmits itself from infected pendrives and infects any pendrive you insert in an infected PC further spreading itself.
