MSI.DLL:222 error message

When trying to install a program, I got a error message "MSIEXEC.ECE file is linked
to missing export MSI.DLL:222. I have contacted Gateway, Microsoft & the maker of
the program, however, all point fingers to another instead of offered a solution.
Can anyone help?

I assume by "MSIEXEC.ECE" you intended to type "MSIEXEC.EXE". MSIEXEC.EXE and
MSI.DLL are both Microsoft program modules in \Windows\System directory with Windows
ME and should be at the Windows release date unless modifed by some other program.
If one of them is missing, then you need to extract a copy from the Windows *.CAB
files in the \Windows\Options\Install directory. And try to find out why it was
missing in the first place.
Now if your install is looking for MSIEXEC.ECE, then you have a corrupted install
program some where and it needs to be replaced with a clean copy.

I have this problem when trying to load new software. Where can I get a clean copy
of the corrupted install program? I assume it is within windows - my PC came with
Windows 98 pre-loaded but I didn't get the windows disks with it.

I have been getting the "MSIEXEC.EXE file linked to missing export MSI.DLL:222" error
message so downloaded the WindowsInstaller (InstMsiA.exe). Unfortunately, when I
try to extract the new Installer, I get the "MSIEXEC.EXE file linked to missing export
MSI.DLL:222" message again so can not fix the problem - any ideas?
I also tried to download IE v6 but when it finished downloading I got the message
"a previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot" however rebooting does
not fix the problem. After rebooting, I still get this message when trying to install
/ download anything else.
Thanks

This seems to be a common occurence. Microsoft has a page discussing how to work
around it. It can be found here:

Hello Jack Gulley,
Thank you for your response to the MSI.DLL:222 error message. I am trying to install
new software and I got the same error message. Your response was to extract the file
from Windows*.CAB located in Windows........ As I am not used to doing this, Can
you please tell me how to "extract" the file? I got as far as the two folders CAB
and Install but could find anything with MSI.DLL:222... Pls advise

There are several ways to extract clean copies of a file from the system *.CAB
files. One is to use the extract command in a DOS window. But in Windows ME, this
has been added to the MSCONFIG utility also.
Start - Run - MSCONFIG and click OK
In the System Configuration Utility, click the Extract File.. tab.
Specify the system file you would like to restore in the field and click Start.
In the Restore from: field, click the pull down bar and select the correct
location of your system *.CAB files. On a Micro$oft box version it is normally the
Install folder. On an OEM install, it is normally the CAB folder.
In the Save file in: field, enter the full path name of the folder where
you want the extracted copy of the file to be placed (or replaced).
Click OK and it should search the *.CAB files in the Restore from folder and locate
a copy of the file if it is in there somewhere and the place a copy where you told
it to.
