Question about 'What to Throw Away'

I read that it is possible to delete the "Uninstall" data, but I would like to know if I can delete the uninstallation junk left behind by IE? There is a folder in explorer called Uninstallation, but I am not sure if it is safe to delete. Not sure where this "tune up wizard" is either ?????? Is that the "Maintainance Wizard" in ME? -Anastashya

Re: the uninstall data for I.E......no, leave them there, or you'll have problems, if ever need to revert to an older version for some reason. Plus, do NOT delete install log files, because programs need those for an uninstall. CJ

Your welcome,

I like to get rid of junk, too. Here's some more for you to work on. =) You can key
in several file extensions at the same time, just seperate with a semi-colon....no
spaces.

*.000 *.001 *.002 *.003 (etc.) *.---
*.CHK *.Gid *.Bak *.OLD *.prv *.fts *.ftg chklist
*.ftg chklist *mscreate.dir

Safe to delete anything beginning with ~ such as ~mssetup.t

Get rid of any pre-installed "Online Services" folder. Go into "Add/Remove Programs"
in the Control Panel and uninstall it, then go into "Windows Explorer" and delete
the entire folder.

Get rid of any programs, drivers, updates, patches, etc. that you previously downloaded
and installed and still have stored in a download folder. Unless you have a reason
to keep any of them for a future reinstall, delete them all.

Get rid of excessive screensavers. Type *.SCR, then bring up the list. Open each
one to see what it is. Delete the ones you no longer use or want. (Note: If a screensaver
is listed in "Add/Remove Programs" or is listed in the Start menu with an "Uninstall"
or "Remove" option, remove it that way instead of just deleting the file)

Get rid of excessive video clips. Type *.MOV, then open each one and see what it
is. Delete the ones you no longer use or want. Do the same with *.AVI files.
(Note: A new computer normally comes with several introductory and advertisement-type
movie clips where can consume a lot of hard drive space)

Once you are finished, view contents, and Empty the Recyle Bin. Once you empty the
Recycle Bin, a lot of free space will be scattered all over your hard drive. Run
Scan Disk and Defragmenter to optimize your hard drive and speed things up. Reboot.

CJ

CJ ! Thankyou!!! My C:\Drive is going so fast :-). I even went so far as to use IEradicator and get rid of all the IE's plastered one on top of the other. I lost a few DLL files, but replaced them and then did a full scan of directory, disk, surface in DOS, then in windows itself. All is going fast as lightening. I can't believe it. I cleaned up 57mb with your tips alone. Now IE6 loads web pages so fast the graphics can't keep up. Thankyou again! -Ana

Hi, I know nothing about computers and I've had this one for almost 3 yrs. At this point, there's a lot of junk on here. I did a search for the file extensions mentioned below, and I have a lot of them. Some of them look like they're part of programs (or applications or whatever they're called... haha) I use every day. Are they still ok to remove?? For example, I use CallWave and I have a files called IAMSETUP.EXE.log.bak, and IAM.EXE.log.bak. Do I need these?? Thank you!
