Question about 'Downloading Windows Updates'

I have a question about Downloading
Windows Updates:
I'm pretty new at this stuff so maybe someone can enlighten me. In my Downloads file
I have the following files: liveupdt.grd, liveupdt.sig, autoupdt.trg and a compressed
file with three liveupdt files in it. My system is the Windows Me with a whole bunch
of stuff on it and the Norton Antivirus. Would this be updates for the Norton program?
I do keep it enabled. Also, everything seems to be working fine, would it be worth
while to download the Windows Updates? And is it necessary to give my life story
and get Microsofts "passport" to get the updates of can I get them somewhere else?

You should simply be able to click on tools in Internet Explorer and Windows Update,
unless they have changed things yet again. There should aso be a Windows Update icon
on the start menu. You actually MUST apply ALL of the available updates which are
indicated as critical. Iain.

You should be able to update Windows from their update page accessed most easily
from the start button. The automatic notification feature which is SUPPOSED to work
can be also activated. On my computer it does not work though and after working with
Microsoft's support guys, they finally advised me to re-install Windows ME (No way
I will do this). I would suggest that before you visit the Update page you disable
anti-virus and firewall programs as they can interfere with proper downloading. I
would urge that you get any Critical Updates that are available.

My problem is that the lastest critical download won't install after downloading
(after going through the normal update procedure from Windows). The computer just
locks up.
