Stmgr caused an error in WINTRUST.DLL

"Stmgr has caused an error in WINTRUST.DLL
Stmgr will now close.
If you continue to experience problems
try restarting your computer."
The above error message pops up on start up after the 'Scandisk Error' screen shows
and stays on until the 'Enter Network Password' screen displays. If the computer
is functional, the mouse is very erratic. It shoots off the screen and disappears
or it scrolls down diagonally by itself. Otherwise, the computer can be used for
a few minutes and freezes up. Thanks

Sounds like a virus is trying to corrupt your system by shutting down stmgr or
has managed to corrupt stmgr. Try booting into Safe Mode (hold left Ctrl key down
before the initial Windows ME splash screen) and see if you can get windows up at
all. If not you will have to boot the system with a Windows ME recovery boot diskette.
Look for any WINK???.exe files that indicate an infection with the Klez virus (from
DOS prompt enter: ATTRIB /S WINK*.*). You may also need to restore the stmgr
file from the CAB files if it is infected. You may need to get some experianced help
to take a look at the system or run some Anti-Virus tools on it. Need a lot more
information on what is wrong.

Jack,
Thanks for the response. Unable to start on Safe Mode. Typing attrib /s wink*.*
at the a: prompt returns a 'File Not Found - wink*.*' message. Typed it at C: didn't
do anything. Tried to start windows by typing Win at prompt returned this message.."While
initializing device IFSMGR..The Microsoft Installable File System Mgr cannot fine
helper driver. Ensure IFSHLP.SYS is installed...System halted." Looks like Klez already
won. I may need to reformat my drive. Thanks again. Enrique

hey, if you rename wintrust.dll to a backup name, and you replace crypt32.dll, cryptdlg.dll,
kernel32.xe, stmgr.exe, smgr.dll, (think extract from msdos mode...) and i think
thats it.......and you re-install whatever version of IE you have (if any...) you
should only get a wintrust.dll error at startup, you can now use system propterties
fully, but you cannot use sysrestore yet.....(im workin on it)

I just recently begun to receive this message just after downloading a Windows Update
(818529 - Cumulative Patch for IE6 Service Pack 1). I'd like to know how to fix
it.

I finally figured out a fix!!!!! Now this worked for me and I take no responsability
for anyone elses computer.....But here's an easy fix... Do a search files for stmgr.
An icon that looks like a barcode and says stmgr under it should come up. Delete
it. It is not a neccessary file. I don't know how it got onto my computer but I deleted
it and it's now running like a top with NO error messages. Just a hint

I hope this works. I've called Microsoft and they refused to help me, because they
say it's Dell's problem.
When I called Dell, I work with a service person (in Bombay, India - thanks Dell
for sending those jobs out of the country...we need more Americans out of work).
He tried to have me do numberous things, in which none of them worked. He said
my next step was to completely re-install Windows. He also said I should never do
a "Windows Update".

It worked for me but I don't have a Dell. I have researched this for weeks trying
to rid my self of quite a few error messages and I am happy to say everything that
I did in the past few days did the job. I have an 8 year old comuter that is booting
up like a new one. I am positive that this file was a Windows bug file. They want
to make it neccessary for us to HAVE to upgrade to XP and so on and so on.
Please let me know if it worked for you!!

PS As far as doing Windows updates.... I have learned that you CAN do them (I did
a couple last night) But you have to know how to work the bugs out afterwards. Can't
say for sure if the updates really do very much for our computers.....

Try looking here for info. Deleting this file (SMGR) will cause this checking application
to not do its job. http://www.wilderssecurity.com/archive/index.php/t-14752.html

See the discussion on Sucatreg caused error in Wintrust.dll - suggestion there was
to rename the c:\Windows\System\Catroot folder, reboot and Windows Me will create
a new Catroot folder. The message Stmgr caused error went away when I did this.
The problem appeared first on a Microsoft critical update of Internet Explorer

As a followup to my previous post, once the new Catroot directory is created, you
need to reset System Restore by going to My Computer/System/Performance/troubleshooting
and disable System Restore, reboot, repeat to re-enable System Restore, reboot and
then create a restore point.

I can't thank you enough!! I've tried everything and nothing worked.
This fixed my problem with the WINTRUST.DLL and stmgr error and the lack of restore
capabilities which all started after I downloaded the MS security fix in Dec 2005.
Restore works again!!!
The MS support was non existent on this one--which they caused with their huge security
fix!!
