Some say good ... some say bad, there's a lot of information about it here if you're interested.

I find that ME works MUCH better with it switched off and the _RESTORE file deleted.
I just use the Windows Start-Up diskette (bootdisk) and C:\scanreg /restore.
The problem is that system restore writes fixed files all over the place and this
makes a mess of scanning and defragging as it is also running in safe mode.
You can set the _RESTORE file to zero length, read-only and system if you want to.

Good answers so far. I use McAfee clean up utility, which tracks installations and
allows you to back them out. Is this enough to make System Restore not needed?

Iain is right. I have found that disabling system restore is much better and I now
use the snanreg /restore function from my bootdisk. Also it saves on disk space.

Hello Rich: Just in case you're still undecided, this is a quote from one of Microsoft's
own knowledge base articles: "Restore points build on previous restore points. If
a restore point created from an earlier date is corrupted, then all subsequent restore
points created from that date forward are also corrupted." Even Microsoft implies
that you should "reset the data store" from time to time. I'll give you a guess what
happened the first time that I needed to use system restore. It didn't. MJD

Keep it! If you run it before you install any new software, you can go
back to where it was running ok. A lot of software and drivers that are
suppose to be ME compatible are not and cause problems. I have been
running ME for almost 2 years and have not had to do a reinstall of the
OS. System Restore saves a lot of time when you have a crash from
a new program or driver.
It does not remove the program or driver. Using the Registry to restore
also does not remove the program or driver.
The procedure is to remove the problem program or driver and then
run System Restore.
Also NEVER install a program that does not have a uninstall program
with it. It suggest the vender did half a job or does not want his program
uninstalled even if it does not work.
You should also run some form of backup of anything that you created.
This should not be on the HD but removable media. This way if the HD
crashes, you don't lose your work.
