no playback device recognized

i just upgraded this weekend from a slot 1 p3 to a socket 478 p4. naturally, i switched
out my motherboard, the processor and the ram, but that was all. everything else
is the same. everything works fine, except the soundblaster pci 128. it appears in
device manager with the windows me driver installed.(no conflicts). it appears in
the device list under multimedia properties, but under playback devices for audio
and voice, it says "no playback device." i have tried removing and reinstalling the
multimedia feature of the operating system. i have tried installing the newer driver
from creative (which crashed the system). i tried removing the pci 128 and using
the integrated onboard sound device, same problem. if it helps, the new board is
the gigabyte titan ga-8sr533. any ideas?

re: no playback device recognized Registry Fix

I had the same problem on my WinME machine. I tried everything with no luck. I finally
figured out it was missing sound kernels and developed a fix. If anyone else is having
these same symptoms of a properly installed sound card but "No Playback Devices"
is displayed, then try my fix. it can be found at www.driverguide.com by looking
up "MS Kernel for Sound" or try this link http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads18/19370.html
be sure to let me know how it works by posting a comment.

I downloaded Haydn's fix from driverguides.com and followed instructions in the .txt
file. I found kernel devices in Device Manager when I booted in Safe Mode, so I
figured the Registry fix was not the answer. Therefore, I deleted EVERYTHING from
Sound, Video, and Game Controllers in Device Manager (rash, you say) and rebooted
in "unsafe" normal mode. Voila! My ALS4000 sound card is now recognized by Windows
ME. ***I do not guarantee this solution. Not for the faint of heart. Do it at
your own risk. Took a good 5 minutes after GUI loaded up to reinstall kernel and
sound card on AMD 500 MHz K6-2.***

i found this single solution elsewhere, and thought i'd at least try to spread the
concept.
first, most of the work revolves around the device manager. most likely, "the old
WDM trick" is the fix, but actually getting the fix to work properly seems to be
the issue.
the WDM trick is really that a System Device is not installed that is necessary for
the AC'97 drivers to work properly (although DM says the device IS working properly).
What you need to do is:
boot to safe mode. open the device manager, and remove all Multimedia/Sound and even
Video devices, and any other devices that didn't load correctly during the last normal
boot. also, specifically look for a system device called "Plug and Play Software
Device Enumerator". This is the actual system device that is usually missing, but
having more than one can cause problems as well. Remove it/them if they are there.
Reboot the system, and be sure to Cancel when you are prompted to locate the drivers
for the "PCI Multimedia Audio Device". this is your actual AC'97 device, but you
need the "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" located and installed prior to
this being installed, so just cancel it. you'll catch it later. load all the other
devices that are found as necessary, and reboot if prompted. reboot until the only
device(s) found are the "PCI Multimedia Audio Device".
go the the Control Panels, and open Add/Remove hardware, and manually add the System
Device called "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" under the Microsoft group
(it should be the only one listed in Win98). Install it, and even though not prompted,
reboot. let's let the driver load correctly and fresh.
this time try to locate and install the drivers for the "PC Multimedia Audio Device"
when prompted. your original CD would be helpful here. In my case, i'd always been
loading the WDM version of the drivers that were supplied, but i found that the non-WDM
version were the ones that worked, so find that driver if possible and load it (it
shouldn't have "(WDM)" listed after the "pretty name" of the found driver).
as soon as the AC'97 driver loads, you should hear sound. reboot just to be sure
once it's done loading.
after days of struggling with this issue, this was a 3 minute fix that worked the
first time. i now have another machine across town to try it on - i'm hoping !!!!!!!!
if this does work for you, go find one other thread you searched somewhere and pass
it along (enhance if necessary).
thanks!

Jeff Newman's response worked! The ME Kernal import does not work for Win98. I
followed Jeff's instructions and had to uninstall all the audio devices and make
sure the plug and play enumerator was loaded. then I simply reinstalled the drivers
and I got sound. Thank you Jeff.
