I fouind that by right-clicking on the _RESTORE file opening properties and changing
the properties from hidden to Archive or (in French) Lecteur seul (What is that again
in English?) and applying the change to all sub folders and files you can simply
delete them. When you re-boot Windows should have made a new _RESTORE file.

For C:\windows\startmenu\programs\startup\MS_SETUP.exe look here: Symantec

Free on-line Anti-Virus check: HouseCall Anti Virus

And another from Symantec: Norton-Symantec

On-line security check from: Symantec Security Check

Configure your connection to protect your bios, etc.

People never cease to amaze me...You've got to get the proper fix to clean up viruses.
You can't just delete viruses. Go to Trend Micro for an online scan. Find out what
you need to do to specifically get rid of any or all virsuses you may have.

Try disabling system restore, reboot, then re-enable it. You can also try via DOS using the following commands; smartdrv deltree C:\_restore

Carol, trendmicro's site says to go into the _Restore\Archive\ folder and delete the files. So, I don't find anything to be amazed about.

One thing I have found with Windows XP was that there was something running called ms_setup.exe . I found that via the Windows Task Manager in the Processes section. I ended the process and continued to delete the file. I only had the BKDR_CHARGE.C virus, and fortunatly, it didn't do anything to my computer. The only other way I can think of to delete it would be to hit F8 on startup and go into DOS and try and delete it from there, since it shouldn't be running.

You should try Codestuff Starter, an excellent program designed for NT/2000 which
also runs on ME, etc. It was originally called Autoruns.

..although this follow-up is nearly a year too late, "lecteur seul" is called "read-only" in English. :o)

EMERGENCY BOOT DISK

These are probably in your hidden C:\_RESTORE Folder so if you open Explorer, and go to Tools Folder Options, View and unhide hidden files and folders and inhide hidden system files then click apply and OK, you should now be able to see the C:\_RESTORE Folder. Right-click on it and open the Properties box. How big is this folder at this time? Now open your controm panel, System, Properties, File System and slide the system Restore folder cache slider down to 200Mb and click Apply, wait for the files to come off the drive and for the disk activity to stop, then click OK and OK you way out of the control panel. Run another anti-virus scan and see if the affected files have been removed. If not go one step further and go back to the Conterol Panel, System, Performance, File System, troubleshooting tab and put a check mark in "Disable System Restore" and click apply, OK, etc. Close all open Windows and re-boot your computer. Go back to this check-box and remove the check-mark, click Apply, OK, etc. Run your anti-virus scanner again. If they have gone you should be in the clear. Open System Restore and put a new restore point in. If the system is not clear you will need to boot to an A:\> prompt using your Windows Start-Up disk(ette) (floppy disk) choose Minimum boot and when the prompt loads type: A:\>DELTREE C:\_RESTORE , press Enter and answer Y = Yes to "Do you want to delete this Folder and all of its sub-folders?" Then re-boot the system and again put a new Restore point in.
