You already know that Windows manages system resources in two blocks of 64Mb.

Is there any way of increasing this to two blocks of 128Mb?

Subject: Some Tips Picked Up After One Year of Maintaining '98/ME ... CUT & PASTE
to an email message to activate the html links.

Windows "Quick" Tune-Up '98/ME

Windows Up-Date site for ALL system-critical and security up-dates:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Windows '98/98se should have 128-256Mb RAM & ME 256-512Mb RAM to
operate properly with todays software and high html content in IE6.0/Opera
6.05: http://www.opera.com/download/

Make a Windows Start-Up diskette (bootdisk) NOW in Add-Remove programs
AND also make a copy of VMM32.VXD on another diskette.

Apply these next two modifications anyway as the system will run better as a
result.

How to Troubleshoot Windows Internal Stack Overflow Error Messages (Q145799)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q145799

Error Message: There Are No Spare Stack Pages (Q149083)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q149083

Then try these as all of them help the system to run better.

Fit Delindex.bat using the delta command, (C:\Delindex.bat delta) setting it
up in your task-scheduler to run on boot-up (or Delta.bat). from:
http://www.burzurq.com/forum/delindex.html
http://gerard.melone.free.fr/Delindex/Delindex.html (Version français.)

Whilst you are there set up OTUNEUP.EXE to run as a weekly maintenance task
too. This will keep any Office programs running better, as it repairs their
file system, and this freeware program clears out the temporary file
folders.
http://www.danish-shareware.dk/soft/emptemp EmpTemp. Set it up to run at
start-up and automatically close again. Don't use the "EmpRunner" feature as
it uses too much in the way of system resources.

Then run this over your system: SpyBot SD from: http://beam.to/spybotsd
Click on English flag. SpyBot is a very revealing program.

Then use this program to clean your registry,
http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/software.shtml Registry Power Tools.
You HAVE to be VERY CAREFUL with this new version. Backup Everything.
Do NOT use if you are not CERTAIN of what you are doing!

Run scandisk and use this free disk-defragmenter as it is MUCH faster than
defrag.exe and MUCH better too. Diskeeper Lite:
http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp

Or you can ALSO use this 30-day trial Defrag from RAXTOR, which is the
very best industry standard defragmentor for all operating systems:
RAXTOR Perfectdisk 2000 v5.0 the absolute BEST:
http://www.raxco.com/products/perfectdisk2k

Or if you really know what you are doing and want to optimise your
swap-file: ( Good for ALL Windows Operating Systems )

VoptXP 7.13 for setting up an optimised swap-file: http://www.goldenbow.com
See: Tools, tune-Up, System, Unloading DLL's, connection tune-up, etc.

YOU MUST set the Min & Max values for virtual memory to the desired size
BEFORE you use the SAME values in setting up the paging-file with VoptXP.
Both settings should also be the SAME. e.g. Min=1000Mb Max=1000Mb.

WIN386.SWP will now show 0Kb (Ko) & PAGEFILE.SYS 1,024,000Kb,
1024Mb (Mo) or 1.024Gb (Go).

If you now run sysmon.exe you will see Windows managing the swap-file WITHIN
the fixed pagefile.sys allocated to the Hard-Disk Drive, especially if you
then click on:

RAMpage 1.6 from: http://www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/index.html
Set the recover limit to 15Mb to free up RAM. Especially good when
burning CD-RW.

I use RealOne Player and change the suffix of realsched.exe to .xex in safe
mode to prevent this from going on-line. LEAVE the TkBellExe entry in
msconfig checked otherwise Real will make another one and you will have a
double
entry.
______________________________________________________

And then INCREASE THE RESTORE POINTS IN SCANREG.INI

Open C:\WINDOWS\SCANREG.INI with Notepad and change the MaxBackupCopies=
value from 5 to the desired number. For example =14. (Two weeks.) And see:

DRWATSON.EXE, DXDIAG.EXE, HELPCTR.EXE, HWINFO.EXE, MSCONFIG.EXE,
MSINFO32.EXE, OTUNEUP.EXE, REGEDIT.EXE, RSRCMTR.EXE,
SCANREGW.EXE, & SYSMON.EXE

Calc 98 http://www.calculator.org/ ;- ) Nice!

Improving System Resources in '95, '98, ME, 2000, XP. (See:
http://www.95isalive.com/tricks/unloadimage.htm for screen shots.)

Windows Explorer has a bad habit of keeping ALL of the DLLs in use in
memory.

For Windows '95, '98, Millennium Edition, 2000 & XP you can modify the
operating system to unload them when they are no longer in use.

This registry entry is used in Windows '98se which is one reason why it
works better.

Open Regedit then go to:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer]

Make sure it contains a Key value, AlwaysUnloadDll with the Default value
set to 1.

If not right click explorer and then click new key. Rename the new key:
AlwaysUnloadDll

Now right click Default, click modify and set the value at 1.

This change does not apply to older 16 bit DLLs. Some programs may give an
invalid page fault message, or crash the system.

To turn it off: Change the value to "0".

If you do not have any errors, this setting speeds up operation, freeing
RAM and returning it to the system.

Close the Registry Editor, and restart Windows to effect the change.

You can add this change automatically using VoptXP from www.goldenbow.com
in: Tools, Tune-up, System, Dll's unloading.

Subject: Perfect Defragmentation IS now Achievable!

VoptXP, Perfectdisc V5.0 and Diskeeper Lite. (All work on '9x & ME)

CUT & PASTE to an email message to activate the html links.

Having tried these products for the first time I have to say that I am very impressed
indeed. I seem to have tried all the defragmenters available after having enormous
problems with Windows Millennium Edition and a friend's '98se.

Now by using VoptXP from www.goldenbow.com to optimise the swap-file into pagefile.sys
and placing its 1024Mb at the front of the disk then running Perfectdisk moving the
blue and yellow files to the front of the disk and the red files to the back-end
of the disk and then back to the front again in two passes, I find that my directories
have been compressed into one very much smaller block and that the rest of the files
are now in two very smooth contiguous groups either side.

You have to set the virtual memory settings to 1000Mb Min & Max first and rebooot
the system, then use the figure 1000Mb in VoptXP too. 1024Mb is what you actually
see as the size of pagefile.sys whilst WIN386.SWP now remains at zero bytes.

When you run sysmon.exe you can still see Windows managing the swap-file inside,
or within, pagefile.sys. NO more problem!

You may not need as big a swap-file (pagefile.sys as 1000Mb so say about 2·5 times
your RAM)

The disk now fizzes lightly, instead of crackling, and the programs open very fast
indeed. Pages change in the blink of an eye and a posting to a Windows Forum showed
on the screen ... instantly! Literally in the time it took to click the mouse button!

I am frankly astonished at the difference, so I then ran Diskeeper, to see what difference
that had made, as I like having Diskeeper's Smart Scheduling to be on ALL of the
time to keep the disk defragmented automatically even when running and using programs.
(Full Version only but Diskeeper Lite is VERY much faster than defrag.exe and makes
a better job too.)

This feature does not seem to be available with Perfectdisk, although Perfectdisk
can be scheduled to run once a day or once a week, and which, although apparently
slower is VERY MUCH more thorough! It does get faster with time and the more frequent
passes you do, as all defragmenters do.

I have to say that I am finally delighted to have defragmenters which actually does
the job it is supposed to do.
I now use Perfectdisk once a month and leave Diskeeper on all the time. (See settings
in msconfig. Only ONE at a time.)

YOU can use VoptXP to include the line: AlwaysUnloadDll in the registry which helps
keep system resources free and to enable ConservativeSwapfileUse which makes Windows
use the RAM

***If you take VoptXP off your system do NOT perform a "roll-back" or you will lose
all the settings! ***

How to prevent BSODs in '98 but NOT with ME. CUT & PASTE to an email message to activate
the html link.

It is said that there are 7 missing VxDs which can be responsible for many of the
BSODs which occur with '98.

These are:

configmg.vxd
ntkern.vxd
vcomm.vxd
vdd.vxd
vdmad.vxd
vflatd.vxd
vmouse.vxd

You should copy these from your cabinet files into C:\Windows\System and then reboot
your computer.

Make sure that you run scanregw.exe and put a registry restore point in BEFORE you
do. Just in case there is a problem.

Alternatively there is a .zip-file fix available. (See also a shut-down fix for '98
half-way down the page.)
