Windows ME will not boot. Only starts in Safe mode

Had trouble with programs starting up all of the sudden. The computer opened in
safe mode only. I could not restore to previous date. The last date saved was 6-2-02.
It was 1-27-03. I ran a virus scan from safe mode and it found w32/yahag@mm in
2 files in the restore/temp directory. They were removed. Ran scan disk and repair
errors. None found. Reran virus scan and virus removal tool from A drive. None
found. Defragged. The computer only starts in safe mode. If I leave it start on
its own it gets to the windows ME logo page and then goes black with blinking cursor
in upper left corner. If I leave it go for about 5 minutes it goes into safe mode
page. Compaq of course says to restore. Any ideas? Thanks

Start in safe mode. Disable system restore as follows DisableSystemRestore
Go to start run type: msconfig and press enter. In the start-up guide disable PCHealth,
SSDPSRV, and all references to system restore, press Clean and apply and re-start.
Open msconfig again to see if they have all been cleared.
Start-Up on bootdisk, get to the DOS prompt and type: A:\>DEL C:\_RESTORE and re-boot.
Make sure that the hideen files are un-hidden (Explorer, tools, folder options, files,
etc.) find the _RESTORE file and change the attributes to hidden, read-only and archive
so it remains at zereo bytes.
The ****** will probably re-appear at some stage as this is in the nature of BG at
MS , (stubborn!)
Un-Install PCHealth, delete the PCHealth sceduled task and run this line in the run
window to also remove Windows Help, msinfo32.exe and other useless junk:
rundll.exe setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection Uninstall 132 C:\WINDOWS\INF\PCHealth.inf
(Bonus! No more Help window in ... Safe Mode!) (Got to be a winner!)
Disable fast-find and delete, from DOS prompt type: A:\>format C: and install '98se.
(You lose everything and gain at the same time!) (Just KIDDING!) (Not really!)
Otherwise: RE-INSTALLING WINDOWS ME
PerformanceImprovement
AlwaysUnloadDll 9x/ME
NTFS/FAT

Thanks for the quick reply Iain. The one thing that I probably will have a question
about that stick out the most is:
Disable fast-find and delete, from DOS prompt type: A:\>format C: and install '98se.
Is the "and install '98se"part of the command prompt? Or what is '98se?

Well '98se is a better OS than ME and although I use ME I have learned this the hard
way. IF I had the option I would remove ME from my computer and use '98se or Win
2000.
You should ignore the bit in quotes and stick with the serious stuff.
Disabling fast-find is a serious endeavour to prevent ME from using too much in the
way of system resources.
Typing A:\>format C: would be a LAST resort before installing from scratch.

I have heard that ME is a pain. I have had it for about 2 years and I really don't
know any better. So the last thing I will do is the prompt to uninstall the windows
help and the PC health stuff correct? I have tried all the obvious stuff for the
untrained. I am hoping this works or I will be trying to slave the hard drive to
save some files before I reinstall. I have not backed anything up for awhile. Thanks
again.

Iain where do I start... The system restore is disabled. In my startup guide I had
none of the files you were asking me to disable. I ran the ME startup disk and had
it start with no CD-ROM support. At the a prompt I typed in the command as noted.
I got a message I would loose all files I think it was y or n. I hit yes and nothing
really happened. I tried a ctrl alt delete but it did not restart so I shut down
manually and removed the boot disk. It still started in safe mode and I could not
find the hidden files you asked me for. I did look for the _restore with a search
and found 11 files with that string in a longer command. I guess I failed.

Using your bootdisk type: A:\>C: and press enter. Then type: C:\>scandisk /all and
see if scandisk repairs anything for you. Do a full disk scan whilst you are there
too. Iain.
To see the _RESTORE file you need to open Explorer and go to tools folder options
and find the tab where you can unhide the hidden files. Iain.

I did the full scan disk and repair last night. It took about two hours. I am following
another post right now to see where it leads. I can just go into DOS mode from my
accessories mode. Is that the same thing? Actually I was just there and did a scanreg
/restore and it pulled up several restore dates for me but they are 8 months old.

No the DOS in the accessories is only partial DOS, you need to use the diskette to
get full DOS support.
You shopuld look in msconfig and make sure that the entry: ScanRegistry is checked.
(i.e. scanregw.exe) as if not you will not have more recent restore points in scanreg
/restore.
Looks like you have a 20Gb disk? Have you thought of over-installing your system
with your Windows CD-ROM? (Not if you have an OEM installation)
A:\> E:\SETUP where E: is your CD-ROM drive when you have CD-ROM drive support enabled.

I have an OEM windows installation. No disk. What tab is the scan registry check
box under. I don't see that either.

If you have an OEM install, you should have the ME CAB install files on your hard
drive. I don't recall the location in WinME, but you could do a search using Find
for *.cab and see whether there's a large directory with cab files in. You can repair/reinstall
your OS that way. I don't think you want to format your hard drive and lose all data!
If you're locked in Safe Mode.....
Try the following:
Open Device Manager - Check through the devices for any duplication/ redundant/broken
devices. If there are any, delete ALL instances of that device.
If it's a device you need, reinstall the driver. Reboot.
Choose Start > Settings > Folder Options.
Click the View tab in the Folder Options dialog box.
Click Show All Files and click OK.
Now go to Start/run, and type: Notepad /msdos.sys (there's a space after 'notepad'!)
This behavior can occur if the [Options] section of the Msdos.sys file contains the
following line: BootSafe=1
If it's there, remove it.
Is there a line 'BootMenuDefault=4', change the '4' into a '1'
If you see an entry 'Bootgui', its value should be '=1' also.
Go to File/Save, and close Msdos.sys. If the properties are set to 'read only', you
won't be able to save your changes, and in that case you should uncheck that box.

I did a search on .cab and me.cab and I came up with about 30 files for .cab and
one for me.cab and it is a readme an internet explorer file. Not sure of the other
.cabs as they are all zip files. I had actually followed this thread in another
post and had done some of the ideas. The redundant devices? I have several that
have the same wording, but I am not sure of their status or what they are for because
in safe mode that info is not available. I am not sure what I am really deleting.
As for the File/Save I am to go to I do not know what this is. Sorry. The other
items in notepad are ok. Thanks

Those zipped CAB files would be taking up a lot of space, and may be your OS install
files. However, reinstalling won't resolve your devices problem.
Which devices are listed more than once? You can tell what they're related to, by
which listing they're under. You need to remove some of those and reboot. Those can
cause problems, just the same as having duplicates. You may not need to reinstall,
just take care of those device issues.
If you don't understand what you're doing, I suggest getting a knowledgeable aquaintance
to help. This gets too difficult and time consuming walking someone through all these
problems. We can't see the situation, so hands on would be better in your situation.
You must know that File - Save as is how you save a document when you make a change.

Carol Thanks for the help. I did not realize we were trying to save the changes
in the word pad / note pad with the file/save function. I didn't make any changes
so I just didn't follow the train of thought. I have actually called a buddy and
have also tried about 8 different types of start ups based on the selective startup
function as per the MS web site to narrow down the problem. No good. I have duplicates
under
Human Interface Devices: compliant consumer control divice, compliant device, USB
HID.
Network adapters: Accton.......PCI Fast Ethernet adapter
System Devices: IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering
Universal Serial Bus controller: Generic USB hub (one of these actually has a green
question mark over the symbol for the USB)
That is it for the multiple entries. Some just have one extra and the HID has several
of the compliant devices.

That's probably why you are in Safe mode. Safe mode is a diagnostic mode and duplicates
will only show in safe mode. Those won't show up in normal mode, so you will have
no clue.
Network adapters: Accton.......PCI Fast Ethernet adapter
Network adapters are notorious for causing problems, if there are extras, or one
that isn't in use. Is your PC networked to another one? First, you need to find out
which one you have physically installed, then remove the other one.
If you're not networked and the NIC isn't in use, it needs to be disabled, by unchecking
the configuration in properties. Highlight device - select properties.
This -> Human Interface Devices= Keyboard, Mouse, Joystick, Gamepad
Is each item listed more than once? I'm referring to exact duplicates of the same
device. If so, highlight and remove them all and reboot. Windows will detect new
hardware and reinstall drivers.
As far as these items go, someone needs to take a look. I can't see the situation.
You need to find out why the question mark. You definitely have device driver problems.
System Devices: IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering
Universal Serial Bus controller: Generic USB hub (one of these actually has a green
question mark over the symbol for the USB)
You said, "Some just have one extra"
Even one extra is too many. You need to remove them and reboot.
Good luck

Carol I am back at it. I deleted several of these duplicates and rebooted. The
computer did not go right into safe mode. Instead I got the distorted desktop picture
and after several seconds it reinstalled several of the drivers, but still did not
go into safe mode. I rebooted again and it gave me a choice of how to start. The
other thing that started happening last night was the icons on my desktop changed
to the white with blue bordered windows.
I also get a message when the Compaq/Microsoft Help center initializes. I does not
complete and I get a message to report the following error to Microsoft. 2147143679.
