Question about 'Downloading Windows Updates'
Monday, February 10, 2003 at 1:56 pm Posted by Susan Carlson

I have a question about Downloading
Windows Updates:
I recently downloaded the lengthy update Windows Media Player 9. Is there any way
that I can get rid of it and go back to the previous Media Player? The immediate
annoyance is poor quality sound; I enjoyed what we had before from appearance, ease
of use and sound quality. I know very little about the operating programs and computers
in general. Help!

Susan,
You should be able to uninstall it in Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel. If
it's listed, just click to highlight it then choose Remove. OK apply, etc.
If it's not listed under that tab, choose the Windows setup tab - Multimedia - click
Details. If it's checked, uncheck it and Apply - OK your way out. Always restart/reboot
after uninstalling or installing a program.
You may need to search the net for a download to the version you want. I don't have
a link.

Thank you, Carol.
Does anyone have any idea where I would be able to locate the Windows Media Player
that came with the Windows ME version rather than the Windows Media Player 9 that
I downloaded? I'm hesitant to uninstall the updated version without something to
replace it. I feel like a baby learning to walk or talk. It should all be so much
easier than this...shouldn't it? Thank you!! Sue

Everyone was just learning sometime. :)
Did you uninstall or just upgrade Media Player? There can be two different versions
installed. I would think it may either be listed there in Windows Setup, or you should
be able to browse your ME install CD for it, IF you have one.
Is the newer version listed in Add/Remove programs or is it under the Windows Setup
tab? I'm not sure which version came with ME. I'm not using ME. Someone else will
know, or I'll find out. If you know, you could easily locate a download using Google;
type in: Media Player ver. # Download.

No, I don't really expect an answer, but......:(

Pretty Sad isn't it. TechTv a favorite Network for me
and pretty current on PC news, is really down on this
product.

Hi Carol! Thank you for your message. The Windows Media Player 9 was offered to
us as an update when we either e-mailed someone or accessed the Internet; we don't
remember which. We just assumed that it was an improvement on what we were using...what
a joke. It is not listed on Add/Remove Programs and the Setup only lists "Multimedia"
at 14MB. We don't know which version we had and discovered that we did not get an
installation CD with our computer when we purchased it. Steve has responded as well
and we looked up the website he suggested. According to that site the only way to
get rid of "9" is to do a system restore and it may not get rid of all the "9" files
and may adversely affect the operation of our computer afterward. Learning the hard
way. Thank you for all your help. Sue

Hi Susan,
The author of "System Restore Remover Pro" claims that in addition to removing
System Restore it will also remove Media Player and Movie Maker. It works well for
System Restore removal but I cannot vouch for Media Player and whether V9 is a candidate:

Hello Steve,
Thank you for your response; we went to the website hoping the information would
be more encouraging. We don't like being stuck with an inferior product but we appreciate
all the time you and Carol and Ron have given us. Thank you. Sue

The final release of wmp9 is so new that a lot is still
not known. It is about Digital Rights Management. It
won't be long before some media web sites music,
movie etc. won't even let us in if we don't have a
product like wmp9 to protect the site from piracy. I
think Microsoft feels it needs to get involved for fear
of being sued by the media mogals. All because PC
users rip off so much of the content. But that doesn't
help you right now to remove something that I think
needs a lot of work yet.

Hello Steve,
We've decided to go back to what we had from the factory and reinstall the additional
programs from our purchased CD's since the system restore won't remove all the 9's
files.
We aren't interested in downloading music, etc. from the internet. We just want
to get back to the good sound we had and simple access. Even our CD creator program
doesn't work as well now.
I'm not looking forward to the work of copying files and the program upgrades...okay
this is it....I'm done whining. Tomorrow is a new day...wait a second...today is
a new day!
Blessings to each of you who have helped us. Bob and Sue

You're welcome, and I wish you the best.
It's getting pretty bad, when people have to restore their system because of an MS
app! That's terrible.....They're using people for guinea pigs, I s'pose. :(
I think we all learn the hard way. :)

error C00D2751 shows up when I try to play a song I downloaded from Wal-Mart and
paid for.
I get an error message when I try to play a song I down loaded and bought from Wal-Mart
on line. Error Message number C00D3751. This tells me there is a problem in the
Digital Rights Management Component. How do I play the song?

I don't think Songs with DRM will play in older versions of Media Player. My understanding
is WMP 9 or 10 are needed. The problem is both of those Players are pretty buggy
too.
