I deleted the shelliconcache rebooted .....nothing happened. i right clicked the active desktop then under effects I changed the icons to "show large icons" the shut down rebooted and of course this time they were all large i right clicked desktop again then made them smaller. I have had no problem since. BTW.....my icons were all black. Hope this helps.

Uninstall TweakUI from the system (if installed). Open Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel, then click the Display icon. Select the Appearance tab. Select the icon in the Item Box. Increase the icon unit by 1. Select Apply. Decrease the icon unit by 1. Select OK. Delete the file %systemroot%\ShellIconCache Note: This file has a hidden attribute. Log off and log back on to see the correct icons.

Just wanted to thank Beaner & Woodguitar for their help. All my icons were overprinted with the FrontPage icon. I racked my brains for months over this. I also tried deleteing the shellicoincache plus a lot of other things which didn't work. Beaner's solution worked great and so would Guitar's .....just that I tried Beaner's first! Thanks again! :)

Running Windows NT V4 . After using TweakUI to get rid of the shortcut arrows on
my icons, most (not all) of my icons became overlaid with the same (but changed every
reboot), icon. Any change I made to the icons thru control panel -->display -->
appearance, the icons would be normal, I deleted shelliconcache afterwards, rebooted
- most icons would revert back to some other but same icon. Same thing if I used
TweakUI.

I tried deleting TweakUI from add/remove programs but it failed.
I got rid of every registry entry with tweak in it.
I got rid of every file with tweak in it, rebooted, and I still get most of my icons
with the same icon. If I changed a display setting and the icons go back to normal....
I tried adding add the Max Cached Icons string value with a value data of 2000 as
suggested on a MS web page -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b132668, still no change....

When I boot in VGA mode the icons all come up OK.
In VGA mode I deleted ShellIconCache, rebooted normal mode, ALL ICONS are now OK!!!

What an evening! All because I did not want shortcut arrows on my desktop icons...
I hope this helps someone.
Any ideas?

To add to my story... After bringing up NT in VGA mode (like safe mode for 98), then
bringing up PC in normal mode, things were ok... Until I changed the icon size in
Control Panel --> display --> appearance.
Then all icons went bad again (after a reboot). I went to VGA mode and did not delete
the shelliconcache file, and then just rebooted in normal mode, and things were fine
again.

I go and change the icon size again, and I had a problem again. But this time I
noticed a pattern. All my desktop Icons that never had a shortcut arrow were the
ones that were fine (undamaged). All my desktop Icons that did have a shortcut arrow
had the same Icon overlaying the old good Icon. So, I could still see the original
icon below the 'corrupt' icon when the good icon was bigger than the 'corrupt' icon.

Did any of you try changing your icon size again to see if your icons became corrupt
again?

Any ideas what can solve this mess?

Remeber I did start making a icon change (no short cut arrows) in TweakUI, which
started this mess...

I use Windows ME and experienced this problem I followed the instructions in this forum and thankfully managed to get back my desktop icons - however my bottom toolbar, and other random small icons still show up all black. Any suggestions?

Hi woodguitar! Thank you very much for your tip. It has worked for me. The stupid icons started to annoy me two days ago. I tried and tried many ways to get them right. To no avail. And then you crossed my way. Now I can see ALL my icons again. What a great day! I am very grateful for your help. If you are interested in spending 2 weeks in Senegal (Africa) in a double room (you and a friend of yours) for free, please email me.

This was the fastest fix for me. At first my icons were all black, when i rebooted they were all the generic white icon. right clicking on active desktop then changing the effect to show large icons, then apply, then changing back and applying was so simple and fast almost unbelievable. thank you thank you

Hi Beaner! What a great answer! Worked perfectly for my husband's windows me. I didn't even have to restart, just made the icons LARGE and the color came back, then made them SMALL and the color was still there : ) It's Jan. 2009 and you might not check here any longer, but just wanted to say THANK YOU! : )
