Me doesn't shut down completely on command

When I shut my computer down, the monitor shuts down, and all the lights go off on
the tower, however, the fans keep running. Further, I can only "turn the computer
back on", by hitting the reset button. I run Verizon DSL, and Norton A/V, and my
system is Windows ME.

I have the exact same thing. It is the drive for your lan card that connects to
your DSL service. Try disabling that card before you shut down your computer from
the control panel. That is the only work around I have found.

My problem is very similar. My monitor will go black with a lone flashing cursor
in the upper left hand corner and my CPU will stay on. The only thing I can do at
this point is a cold shutdown causing it to go into scandisk at startup because it
did not shut down properly. Plus, I am using cable modem, not DSL.

My problem is very similar. My monitor will stay on, along with the fan, but no cursor,
just a redish black screen. I am also using cable modem but I did have DSL installed
before that! The thing that really gets me is that it doesn't do it every time! Also
when scan disk starts upon startup, It keeps restarting and most of the time it never
finishes scanning. The only way I have found to get it to scan complete on startup
is to un-plug my cable modem. There have been a few times that scan disk will find
an error in boot, with the modem on, but, if you are not there to click "OK" right
away it will tell you it has to scan again because windows has written to the drive.
The second scan I have not had a problem with.

Tim, I have found that if I don't end task on everything that is up and running ie.
control/alt/delete (one time) and then shut down my screensaver, I will have the
same problem with my Scan Disk. However, like you, my pc is also spuradic on when
it chooses not to completely shut down. It's frustrating to say the least.

Well I figured it out! My problem at least. I hope the list that follows will help
someone else too. (Ref. Below)
1) I noticed a file trying to connect to my network but my firewall was not letting
it. The file name was "cmd32.exe". It was really bogging my system down too. Then
I noticed it was happening when I used Kazaa, peer 2 peer. I thought about it and
remembered I downloaded a screen saver from Kazaa and clicked on the file and nothing
happend, or so I thought!
2) I checked my system monitor and my Kernel Prosessor Usage was running @ 100% non-stop!
3) I went to Google and looked up "cmd32.exe" and I came to a site that said it was
a Trojan.
4) I looked to see if I still had the trial Trojan Remover Program I downloaded and
I did. I installed it and ran the update, then I ran the scan! It found all the files
and tried to rename them. It was able to do some but some were in use. So it needed
to do a restart. Before I clicked to restart I noticed it said trojans will sometimes
prevent shutdowns! Ah ha!!!! BINGO!!!!
After I had to shut the power switch off and rebooted, it renamed the rest of the
files!
3) I unplugged my cable modem turned off all but my Anti-Virus and my Firewall and
ran Scan Disk. Then I defragged my system and I have been error free since. I have
shut down and restarted several times. No problems.
Refferences:
Firewall - Free - (http://www.sygate.com/)
Anti-Virus - Free - (http://www.grisoft.com/)
Trojan Remover - Trial - (http://www.simplysup.com/)
I hope this helps someone else!

Tim if you or anyone uses Kazaa, you also need to remove the SPYWARE ,ADWARE from
the sytem this will creat Many many problems.
lavasoft.com has a free version of AD-AWARE to download .
Let it clean out everything it finds.
This will also disable kazaa since it has spyware made in it.
If you insist on running kazaa just reinstall it after ad-aware has finished.

I am having a similar issue. My hard drive is completely off but the the case fans
continue to run until I hold the power button for a couple seconds. This is also
the case when I do a system restart, I just get a blank screen and I am forced to
hit the restart button manually. I have scanned my hard drive with every imaginable
program and nothing seems to be wrong.... can anyone help?
