First of all try running scandisk. If that is OK then get into safe mode and see
if you can run defrag.
If there is still a problem with defrag press Ctrl+Alt+Del and see if there are any
suspicious programs running. You can also look in Add-Remove programs and see if
anything has attached itself to your system via the 'net because the "Allow self-installing
executables" box(s) are checked in the advanced settings of IE.
If defrag still presents a problem the BEST advice is to use the freeware program
Diskeeper Lite made by Microsoft's BackOffice. VERY fast and VERY good!
Diskeeper Lite for fast defragmenting: Diskeeper Lite 7.0
SpyWare has a habit of fouling up the system and defrag so get it off your computer
with:
SpyBot is a VERY revealing program! Click on Language flag.
AdAware 6.0
Pest Patrol
SpywareBlaster
SwatIt
And remove all of the bloat files, etc with:
Automatic Deletion of TIF, TEMP & index.dat files. Delindex & EmpTemp
SYSTEM RESTORE can be a problem after a while as it just grows and grows. Go to Explorer,
tools, folder options, view, and unhide hidden files and folders.
Open the directory/folder tree, find _RESTORE and right-click on it to see the size,
it is probably FAR too big by now.
You can sometimes delete it by right-clicking and choosing delete. If not you CAN
delete it from a DOS prompt using a bootdisk (Start-Disk)(See: Add-Remove programs
in the Control Panel.)
The command line is: A:\>DEL C:\_RESTORE
Windows will build a new one on re-boot.
If your system is not FULLY updated you may not have the patch for the restore system
for dates after the 8th of September 2001, in which case it will not work at all.
Another way to empty the _RESTORE file is to open the Control Panel and click on
System, file system, troubleshooting.
Check the box to disable system-restore and re-boot. You should be able to hear the
old files coming off.
I don't use system restore as it can trap viruses and then re-introduce them into
your system, so you should make sure that there are NO file exclusions listed in
your Anti-Virus. If the _RESTORE file is too big it takes an age to scan!
I prefer the '98se system of scanreg /restore which also exists in ME and so I just
increase the number of MaxBackupCopies in scanreg.ini to 10.
System Restore can also stop your AV from working if you receive anti-virus definitions
after the last restore point and then attempt to restore to a previous setup. (System
Restore is a partial misnomer as it will NOT fully restore your system to original
settings.)
If you over-install ME you will lose all of your settings! See link on Re-Installing
below.

Dear Lain,
thank you so much for your advice. I worked on it today and everything works finally
fine again. The Diskeeper is very good and I could also upgrade my AdAware 5 to 6.
I deleted the \_restore files that had really accummulated on both my computers.
I will go also with the scanreg/restore for the registry.
THANKS again
Ernst
