Internet Explorer & Folders 'Slow' To Open

Whenever I start my computer, it asks for my MS Networking Password - I just hit Enter because I dont use a password for it. If I do not repeatedly hit Enter for the first 20 seconds after the screen appears, it takes me two minutes for my request to be carried out by the computer. When I want to start Internet Explorer, it loads up the IE program and then waits around 20 seconds before it shows me it properly - even when having about:blank as default page. Also, when using folders in 'Web Page View' as 98 calls it, the system appears VERY slow, and it can take around 20 seconds before anything loads into it. I know I am a dinosaur by these days standards (Ive got 128MB Ram), but surely it shouldn't be running this slow? Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Only 128Mb of RAM is really not enough, Windows is better with 256Mb which is really
the minimum with increased web-content and more programs multi-tasking than ever
before. 512Mb is ideal. A good defrag IS essential: DISKEEPER LITE

Use this defrag to take a good look at your disk-drives, so that you can see the
picture CLEARLY.

As to RAM the BEST advice is to get some more as it is so inexpensive.

Also you need a good clean-up diagnostic and maintenance kit for ME to keep it running.

Apart from Norton Utilities which you would have to buy, you can use all of these
programs, etc. on your computer to help speed things up:

CRUCIAL  INSTALL.PDF  MICRON RAM

DocMemory 2.0  DOWNLOAD

RAM memory assistance: RAM:PAGE 1.6  DOWNLOAD

Good reading about Virtual Memory allocation: VIRTUAL-MEMORY

RAM1  RAM2  RAM3  RAM4

Windows Start-Up BOOTDISKETTE  DOS COMMANDS

Manual deletion of: _RESTORE & TEMP folders & Temporary Internet Files from the DOS
prompt and the too, etc.

A:\>DELTREE C:\_RESTORE , [ENTER] will delete the _RESTORE folder AND sub-folders.

A:\>DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\TEMP , [ENTER] will delete the TEMP folder and sub-folders.

A:\>DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\Tempor~1 , [ENTER] will delete the Temporary Internet Files.

A:\>DEL C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DATACOLL\*.* , will delete the useless DATACOLL
files whilst you are doing this.

SPYBOT-SD  VIEW  DOWNLOAD

SpywareBlaster

AdAware 6.0

Automatic Deletion of TIF, TEMP & index.dat files. DELINDEX

And for all other temp files: EMPTEMP 2.0

Spider

ERASER

REGISTRY CLEANER REG-CLEANER 4.3

Free on-line Anti-Virus check: TREND-MICRO  PANDA  BITDEFENDER

And another from Symantec: NORTON-SYMANTEC

On-line security check from: SYMANTEC SECURITY CHECK

Configure your connection to protect your bios, etc.

VIRUS REMOVAL TOOLS

ZIP-FIXES UNZIP-FIXES

KAZAA WORM FIZZER

Work through all of these one by one and read through the links too.

Firstly, if you're not networked and don't want the network logon box popping up,
go into the Control Panel - Network applet. For Primary Network Login choose Windows
Logon.

While you're in the Network applet, remove unnecessary network devices. There are
many installed by default that are not needed in every case. Remove Client for MS
Networks, NetBEUI, IPX/SPX Compatible.

If you have an Ethernet card (NIC) installed but aren't using it, go into Device
Manager click the plus and highlight and choose Properties. Disable it. It'll have
a question mark next to it, but those really affect performance.

Mac, when I go to download DELINDEX, the instructions say, "If the 'Save in' box doesn't say (C:), click on the folder icon with the up arrow on it (next to the box) until (C:) appears in the box." I don't seem to have any such folder icon with an up arrow on it; just to the right of the box are three icons, one of which is greyed out; the next is a folder which seems to create a new folder, and the third is a View Menu icon. How do I get the proper destination in the "Save in" box? ( It currently says "Desktop.) Thanks

Just to say hello Carol and Happy New Year to you. How are things in the US of A?

MAC

If you have a burner and can get to a broadband download try out Knoppix v3.3-2003-11-19-EN.ISO
(699.9Mb) and burn it to a 700Mb CD-RW

It is a FULL operating system based on Linux BUT which WILL run on a Windows Machine
FROM the CD-ROM drive!!!

2.0Gb of FREE OS and Software with a CD-Burner and all manner of GOOD programs such
as a FULL Open Office office suite!!!

FREE!!

These people gladden an old Scotsman's heart with their kindness!

Hi MAC, and Happy New Year to you!

Things are alright here in the Pacific NW, after our lousy winter weather calmed
down a bit. Our new year came in with a good ol' fashioned blizzard and lots of snow.
However, I'm glad I don't live in the midwest or New York.

I saw that Knoppix discussion on this forum awhile back. A new exciting thing to
you, it sounds like. I'm still running my antique, so no luxuries. I'm glad you enjoy
it. I'm sorry I didn't respond to your email.....get preoccupied and you know how
that goes. I did get it and meant to send you a note.

Take care and thanks for thinking of me. :)

Carol

Hi Carol, Good to hear from you. If you like, and because of the download time, you
could send me an email with your address, and I will post you a copy with a bootdiskette.
You only need some 32Mb RAM and space for a 64-128Mb knoppix swap-file and you can
give it a try. Or if you have kids who like some of the games give it away.

You can run the entire OS FROM the CD-ROM so it does not use up a lot of space on
your comp. Does NOT need a dual boot system either, just the bootdiskette.

Very handy to have as a recovery program for Windows FAT16 & 32 (not NTFS) especially
if you have or can borrow a burner.
