VERX.DLL Error
Monday, June 2, 2003 at 1:32 pm Posted by Kenny
(6 messages posted)
I was having problems with WINSPOOL.DRV being deleted from my computer so I ran the
ME Restore disk. Every time I run the disk I get to 65% done and window pops up
that tells me there was an error and I have to close Restore. Then a window pops
up that says error in VERX.DLL at 0002:24AE. After I reboot it tells me that WINSPOOL.DRV
is not present. I know how to copy WINSPOOL.DRV but how do I get rid of the VERX.DLL
problem. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance,
Kenny

Hello Kenny, this might be the one which you are looking for:
SUWIN error in verx.dll during Setup
There appear to be more and more of these errors cropping up and the only solution
so far has been a parallel install.
While a parallel install works, it requires reinstalling all your applications, which
can have enormous cost in time.
The problem is due to either a new version of Windows Media Player or Internet Explorer
and the way to fix each one is listed below:
IE:
Rename c:\windows\system\iemigrat.dll *.old
Rename c:\program files\Internet Explorer\W2k\migrate.dll *.old
Rename c:\program files\outlook express\9xmig.dll *.old
WMP:
Rename c:\windows\system wmp*.dll *.old
Rename c:\windows\system wmp.ocx *.xoc
Rename c:\program files\windows media player wmp
After that, run setup again.

then faced with 'error starting program the 'winspool.drv' is linked to missing export
NTDLL.dll:NTQUERYINFORMATIONPROCESS' ...along with 'couldnt load library winspool.drv'
and then 'general protection fault module VERX.dll@0002:24AE...arghhhhh..is there
much more?? iv given up all hope of rebooting as iv followed a few steps given to
other members at an earlier time with no joy...so i now wish to format it..only i
cant get into dos without windows loading first..what am i doing wrong?? iv also
tried goin thro 'my computer' clicking c drive then in file clicking 'format' and

I had the exact same problem on a friend's Dell computer with WinME. The problem
occurred after installing some Windows updates. When booting, the computer displayed
an explorer.exe error and stated that Windows needed to be reinstalled. Compounding
the problem was that the CD-ROM drive was found to be inoperable and needed to be
replaced. After replacing the CD-ROM drive, I attempted to reinstall ME but got "SUWIN
and verx.dll" errors when the installation progress reached 65%. After following
Mac's suggestions for renaming the files, I was able to reinstall WinME and successfully
restore the computer to it's original state.

Hello Paul, I have some of these files on my system but not all of them. You might
need to look in the Windows Explorer tree and check manually. If they don't appear
don't worry about it. Just proceed. If you tried going from IE5.5 to IE6.0 SP1 and/or
then tried to revert to IE5.5 it is usually better to remove IE altogether with IEradicator
and scan & defrag and then do a fresh install of IE6 with a full update. Happy New
Year to you! MAC

Thanks MAC.
I've tried the fix of changing the 6 file ext but it didn't quite do it so I deleted
all of the WMP files at the DOS prompt by del c:\windows\system\wmp*.*
I then ran setup from the Me CD and it worked!
I had a problem with the resolution which may or may not be related but Jack Gulley's
comment in tread #1074124390 fixed it.
To all those who have the VERX.DLL error. Try Mac's suggestion first then get mine
if that fails. I'll send Bill Gates a bill for 6 hours of my waited time!!!
Thanks again Mac.

Use the Windows Start-Up diskette (floppy) you made when (he hopes) or make one on
another ME Machine. Put it into the A: drive and start up. Choose minimum boot and
then type:
A:\>scanreg /restore , and press ENTER.
You need to choose a date before you did the install.
Now try re-booting to the desktop. You need to use System Restore to remove WMP 9
If you have a Windows ME CD and the Product Key number you can format fom A:\ with:
A:\>format C: , and then do a full re-install. You WILL loose ALL of the data on
the drive though, so if there is any you need to keep burn it off onto CDRWs.
You cannot format the C:\drive in Windows as it is running!!! ;-)

what if...

Mac, I am having the same problem as that described here. I followed your instructions
(from safe mode) but I had only two of the files you mentioned: "program files/Internet
Explorer/w2k/migrate" which I changed from .dll to .old and the "program files/pit;ppl
ex[ress/9xmig" for which I also changed dll to old.
I do not have the other files listed and your instructions are not very clear on
the last item "program files/windows media player wmp". What should it be changed
to?
I have NOT had the WINSPOOL.DRV problem (knock on wood.)
I am tempted to try Scott's suggestion, but I don't totally understand it, either.
Pardon my ignorance, but how do I get to the DOS prompt? My computer starts in
Save Mode. When I DO finally find the dos prompt, do I just type in "c:/windows/system/wmp*.*",
literally?
Pardon, but many of the references and modes of giving advice are written in language
that I don't totally understand (and I'm not really all that green to the ways of
the computer.)
I hope someone is still checking this thread, I really don't want to buy a new hard
disk (as Dell suggested...buggers.).
Thanks, Kipper

P.S. Bios?

P.S.
I just read the MS KB article that you have linked to your solution, MAC. It suggests
solving the problem by adjusting the BIOS. I know absolutely zero about how bios
work and am VERY wary about chaning them.
I am assuming that the solutions offered here are an ALTERNATIVE to adjusting my
BIOS. Am I right?
Huge thanks, again. Oddly, there is comfort in knowing that someone else had this
problem and fixed it.

I had this same problem, and this solution helped me to solve it. Thank you.
However, it is important to note anyone following your instructions verbatum will
be in trouble. First, you made a syntax error:
>Rename c:\windows\system wmp*.dll *.old
>
>Rename c:\windows\system wmp.ocx *.xoc
Typing this as you wrote it will rename the system folder and prevent re-installation.
The correct syntax is:
Rename c:\windows\system\wmp*.dll *.old
and
Rename c:\windows\system\wmp.ocx *.xoc
Second, anyone not familair with DOS will be unable to follow some of these steps.
Remember that DOS names things diffrently then windows. Any filename with two words
gets abberviated. Example:
Rename c:\program files\Internet\W2k\migrate.dll *.old
should read:
Rename c:\progra~1\intern~1\W2k\migrate.dll *.old
Any two-word file name with more then six letters get shortened to the first six
letters, a tilde (~) and a numerical value, ususally 1.
Examples:
Program Files = Progra~1
Outlook Express = Outloo~1
Internet Explorer = Intern~1
I hope this is helpful.
