Windows ME major problem

Ok, I recently screwed my stupid computer up.. It was completely my fault though.
I was trying to be a wise guy and delete all "un-wanted" files from my C:/ drive,
such as, in the WINDOWS folder I deleted A LOT of stuff that was needed. And I deleted
some various programs that I dont think have anything to do with my general problem...
I was assuming that I could use my windowsME reinstall disk when I tryed this, but
later found out that will not work.
Ok, here is my problem:
1.) the first time I restarted my computer after deleting all of those files my resolution
was huge and running on a very low color setting. I fixed this with putting in my
reinstall the drivers disk.. That fixed that problem.
2.) I do not have a mouse AT all and I am having to navigate with my keyboard. Very
annoying.
3.) Everytime I try using the reinstall windowsME disk it shows an error after a
little while.
4.) I cannot enter ANYTHING in the Control Panel > Settings folder.. It will just
say "File missing rundll32.exe" or something like that.
5.) I cannot get online because it will just show up errors.
That is about it... I know that I can reformat but I do not have a "bootup disk"
nor do I know where I can get one. Any help would be appreciated!! THANK YOU!!

Another thing I forgot to post is when I first boot-up windows it goes from that
loading screen with the WinME logo strait to a error: "WININIT.exe is missing/unavailable"...
and from the logo screen to this error is like a 2 second time span... thanks

Well you should have a Windows bootdiskette START-DISK
You CAN make one on any other Windows ME Computer.
If you are fortunate enough to have the Cabinet files ON your Hard Disk-Drive then
you could do an over-install of your operating system.
With the Start-Disk [Botdiskette] in the A: drive, start your computer, and at the
choice screen, choose "Minimum boot" and press enter.
When the A:\> prompt loads type: A:\> C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\INSTALL.EXE [Or SETUP.EXE]
and press enter.
The re-install should proceed from there.
RE-INSTALLING WINDOWS ME
YOU MUST HAVE your Windows ME ProductKey code to complete the install.
Provided that the file: C:\WINDOWS\system.dat , is still on your C: drive , you can
find it from the DOS prompt too.
Type: A:\>EDIT C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT
Using your keyboard, press Alt then right arrow to move over to Edit. Down arrow
to get to Search and press enter. Type: ProductKey , in the search window and press
enter.
The Number which you are looking for should appear immediately after the word ProductKey.
I.E. ProductKey ABCD1-BCDE2-CDEF3-DEFG4-EFGH5 , for example. [That is a ficticious
number, btw.]
Make an absolutely ACCURATE record of it.
If the install hangs run: A:\>scandisk /all , and yoou should do this FIRST before
attempting the overinstall.
If you are lucky it might work for you. Have you tried getting nto safe mode by tapping
the F8 key during stsrt-up? With all of those files missing I doubt if you can, but
it might be worth a try.
Otherwise:

Good luck!

Major problem and it could be almost impossible to recover from without formatting
and installing everything again, if you deleted some of the critical information
files Windows ME builds and uses.
First, you really need a boot diskette. You can make one from Control Panel -
Add/Remove Programs - Start disk tab. You can make one on someone Else's system if
necessary.
Second, you need to try to boot into Safe Mode if you can. (hold Ctrl key while
booting before the splash screen).
I assume you can boot some way (diskette to DOS, or Safe Mode) because you indicated
you installed video drivers to fix the video screen size problem.
Boot system and locate your System *.CAB files. They are in the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL
(or \CABS) folder. If they are still there (there are 25 of them), they contain compressed
copies of all Windows ME files necessary to replace/rebuild Windows ME. There should
also be a copy of SETUP.exe in the folder. Run it. This is the Windows ME
install SETUP program. It will allow you to run an install of Windows, just like
from the CD, just faster. You will need to know your ProductKey number. It
should be on your install CD package, or you can locate it in your Registry by searching
for "ProductKey". This should rebuild Windows ME.
You will have to go to the Windows UpDate site to update
all the fixes and security updates again.
Note: the problem installing with your CD is most likely a dirty or damaged CD
or a drive that is having read errors. The "CD file system" software that loads
as part of the SETUP/install program does not have much "error recovery" code in
it and almost any soft read error causes the install process to crash. If your system
CAB files are gone, you can create a temporary install folder on the disk and copy
all of the files in the Win9x folder on the CD into the temporary folder on the
disk drive. Then run the SETUP from this temporary folder (so you don't get CD read
errors).

Optimising Performance ME / '98 Fdisk & Format, Re-Install. 15/06/2003
If you have a large hard disk-drive (e.g. this is a 60Gb drive) then partitioning
the disk has a number of advantages. 1.0GHz 256Mb SDRAM
This is an OEM installed computer and the OEM will tell you that their recovery program
will not only remove all data but will also remove any set partitions. NOT entirely
true, as data WILL be removed on the C: drive but not on other drives, D: , etc.
and set partitions!
To partition the disk successfully you need to use a Windows Start-Up diskette (bootdisk)
or your OEM's "recovery" floppy DISKETTE with both Fdisk and Format on the diskette.
Take all of your data off the machine, files, favourites, email, address books, music,
images and data and burn them all onto CD-RW backups.
Start the computer up on the bootdisk and get to the A:\> prompt by choosing "minimum
boot" here type: A:\>format C: , and press enter to clear the old disk configuration
of all data.
When complete type: A:\>fdisk and press enter to get to the fdisk partitioning program
where you will see a choice of things to do. Choose to delete primary drive C: which
is set to use 100% of the available disk space. Ignore the warning about losing data
and hit enter. Now press escape to return you to the first menu.
Here you choose to set the ... PRIMARY ... DOS drive and press enter. Fdisk will
now check the entire drive space and then ask you to allocate the required size
in Megabytes. I chose 10.0Gb for drive C: to run ME, Office 2000, ECDC, RealOnePlayer,
NAV/NIS, a Power DVD and about 50 other software applications.
With the 10.0Gb primary drive C: allocated, you can now press Esc to return to the
first menu where you should choose (2) to set drive C: as the active drive "A" .
If not sure if the program set drive C: as the active drive, chose (4) to see the
size of the set drive and if it is set active "A" then press Esc to return to the
main menu. (Add your volume label when prompted to do so and make a note of it somewhere
safe. I used IXTREME1 which is the P-B model name.)
Now choose (3) to set an ... EXTENDED ... DOS partition as drive D: . Fdisk will
again check the disk and then ask you to set the size. In this case there is 50Gb
of
disk space, so just press enter. I used the volume label IXTREME2 for the D: drive.
You have now divided your disk in two, C: = 10.0Gb & D: = 50.0Gb [Or 6.0 / 54.0Gb]
The next stage is to FORMAT so you need to press Esc to get to the DOS prompt and
from the A:\> prompt type: A:\>format C: and press enter. When finished and the file
allocation table is set you need to format drive D:\ so type: A:\>format D: and press
enter.
When both partitions (drives) are formatted you can re-install on drive C:\.
If you have a recovery diskette you CAN use it and with the Packard-Bell OEM system
choose a minimum install with ME and "Smart Restore" only before adding updated Anti-Virus
and software. Run scandisk and defrag after installing.
With everything installed and running smoothly you can now keep all of your documents,
music, images and videos on the D:\ drive but before you do consider setting your
swap-file as a permanent swap-file ( I use a 1000Mb swap-file) by setting the virtual
memory in "system", in the control panel, to the same settings for Max and Min size
choosing to stop Windows from managing it and ALSO choosing the D:\ drive to set
the swap-file to. You can then use a program (such as VoptXP from www.goldenbow.com)
to set the permanent swap-file to the front of the D:\ drive so that all other data
can be stored AFTER it and so that it can all be defragmented more easily.
Now that your C:\ drive is clear of documents, music, images and video it will run
better and faster and if you ever need to do a further re-install of your operating
system you will only have to back-up your email.
Paths to documents in Word, etc. will need to be changed and programs such as Windows
Media Player or RealOnePlayer will scan all drives for media, picking up all of YOUR
material from the D:\ drive. Again paths for saving material to the D:\ drive will
need to be changed.
I can now run with 99% free system resources at start-up and by using the AlwaysUnloadDll
registry setting (a default setting with '98se) the entire system runs much better.
(So far that is!) AlwaysUnloadDll 9x/ME
IML.

NOTE: Find-Fast and the Active desktop are big users of resources. Fast-Find can
cause stalling for several seconds.
You can disable fast find in the control panel using exit and stop after deleting
all of the indexes. Using Windows Classic folders view in Explorer saves on system
resources too. Tools, Folder Options, view.
Disable Taskmonitor in msconfig, delete the [hidden] APPLOG folder and remove the

ONLY if YOU want to:
Uninstall PCHealth, System Restore, Windows Help, msinfo32.exe, etc. Start, Run &
type: rundll.exe setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection Uninstall 132 C:\WINDOWS\INF\PCHealth.inf
NB: You will have to re-install Windows if you want to use any of these features
again.
It is much easier to disable System Restore in the System, performance, file system,
troubleshooting tab, and uncheck *Statemgr & PCHealth in Start, Run type: msconfig
, enter, start-up tab, and then re-boot your system. This allows you to turn it on
again if you have the need to use it.
Open C:\WINDOWS\SCANREG.INI with Notepad and increase the MaxBackupCopies= value
from 5 to the desired number. e.g. =14. (Two weeks.) You now have more possibilities
when using scanreg /restore instead of system restore which you cannow disable in
the system troubleshooting screen. You can also uncheck items in msconfig relating
to system restore and delete the _RESTORE file in ME using your Windows Bootdisk:
A:\>DELTREE C:\_RESTORE.
