Unless you can do it with a successful system restore you are stuck with it. Restore
back to a time before you downloaded it.

On Win ME only way to remove it is thru system restore, or reinstall OS. WMP9 is
loaded with "digital
rights management", it will not play media that it
can not associate a license with. Even many XP users
are not going to like it.

I couldn't uninstall it but what I did was uncheck all the file extensions that were
automatically set for the Windows Me to play (tools/options) so that my system automatically
searched for another soft to play the music.
Worked for me!

actually you can uninstall windows media player 9. I found this on the net so I can't
take credit for it, but it really does work. Just type in the run cmd box found in
the start menu:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\INF\wmp.inf,Uninstall
(no spaces after the commas)
That should be the directory or else alter it to point to your Windows directory.
After typing that in and hitting the enter key it will uninstall.

THIS DOES WORK IN WINDOWS ME AND 98!

You could try installing Tenebril Uninstaller, from www.tenebril.com. I had the same
problem but this program solved it all. It is a trial version though, but I think
you'll make before it runs out.

ditto - what a nightmare
Media Player 9 was causing my video device drivers to fail - updating drivers didn't
help. What sh!t.
rollback worked on XP for me too

I spoke too soon. I followde the above instructions by Steveo. It *looked* like
it work - pop-up about successfull rollback to version 7 appeared. But it didn't
work.
I tried manually deleting the files in the Windows media player directory, and they
deleted, then a few seconds later they reappear.
I think it's hopeless.

This worked on XP Professional

OK, finally got it uninstalled.
Instructions by Steveo did not work for me on XP - at first I thought they did -
dialog boxes popped up saying I had successfully rolled back to previously installed
version of Media Player, but it wasn't there, and it couldn't be re-installed.
What worked was what Microsoft recommended (puzzling, but true): Open Help and Support,
search for System Restore, and select "Run the System Restore Wizard". Select "Restore
my computer to an earlier time" and click 'next'. Look for the restore point "Installed
Windows Media Player 9 Series", select it and click next. Follow few simple steps
from there.

However .....
This restored me to version 6.4, and I can't seem to install version 7 - I get a
Windows Media Component Setup dialog box with an empty list of components that will
be installed, and the 'next' button disabled. Description reads "You have the latest
version of the Windows Media Player and all its components. No upgrade is available
at this time."
Well, at least 6.4 is functional and doesn't crash XP.

Err, no, that wouldn't make sense. People at MS have to use the player too. DRM
only applies to files that the content provider put DRM on. That's it, that's all.
So if you don't like DRM, you never have to use it. :)

WMP7 will never install on XP. The Roxio plug-in it would install would leave XP
unbootable, and no one wants that. Both the OS and the WMP7 installer will thus
block any attempts to install WMP7 on XP.
WMP8 is your minimum/baseline install of WMP on Windows XP.

You can also do this:
Open the file C:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf (assuming C: is the drive Windows XP is installed
on) in Notepad. The list will look similar to this:
[Components]
NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4
WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,,7
Display=desk.cpl,DisplayOcSetupProc,,7
Fax=fxsocm.dll,FaxOcmSetupProc,fxsocm.inf,,7
NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7
iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,,7
com=comsetup.dll,OcEntry,comnt5.inf,,7
dtc=msdtcstp.dll,OcEntry,dtcnt5.inf,,7
IndexSrv_System = setupqry.dll,IndexSrv,setupqry.inf,,7
TerminalServer=TsOc.dll, HydraOc, TsOc.inf,,2
ims=imsinsnt.dll,OcEntry,ims.inf,,7
fp_extensions=fp40ext.dll,FrontPage4Extensions,fp40ext.inf,,7
AutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,au.inf,,7
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
WMAccess=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wmaccess.inf,,7
RootAutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,rootau.inf,,7
IEAccess=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,ieaccess.inf,,7
OEAccess=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,oeaccess.inf,,7
WMPOCM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wmpocm.inf,,7
This lists all the components installed. I believe if you edit the
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
line, you will be able to see the Media Player option in Add/Remove Programs > Windows
Components list and will now have the option to uncheck it, which will keep it from
bothering you.
Where you see the word 'hide' - this is the string that tells Windows not to display
the component
Delete the word 'hide':
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
and change to this:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
Restart and you should be able to see these in Windows Components so you can uncheck
them now. It was a long time ago when I did this, but I think I remember taking out
'hide' from a lot of things just to see what I could see afterwards. HTH.

... and it works in Windows 98 even though I was not able to find (see?) the INF
directory mentioned. Received a message to confirm if I wanted to revert to the
original Windows media player, answered yes and it did the trick.

Thank you, Steveo for posting the information you found over the Internet. If typed
in correctly it does work. It deletes wmp 9 and rollsback to it's original version.
Then you can install a newer version replacing the old.
