Help with help?

When i try to open the 'help' (located on the start menu) it brings up the box with 'Microsoft help and support' (Home Index Assisted support Tours & tutorials etc) however the main page with the help does not load, giving 'The page cannot be displayed' as if it were a webpage which was down. Is there a certain file i have deleted? could this be on the ME cd, or elsewhere? or could it be to do with something different? please help if u can!

The only cure which has worked several times for me has been to over-install ME once
you are certain that the disk is clear of junk files, spybots, Trojans, virii, etc.
and that you have run ScanDisk and defrag before commencing the install.

If your cabinet files are on the HDD all you need then is your ProductKey code and
proceed to:

C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL\INSTALL.EXE

Double-Click on INSTALL.EXE and the over-install will start.

You will loose all non-standard settings but nothing else. [Unless it goes wrong!][Hence
the preparation!]

You will need to re-install DirectX, IE6 SP1, WMP9, and change the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSHTML.DLL
file.

Could it be that you have been running the Registry Cleaner program by Tony Arts? It deletes several registry keys required by Windows ME Help and System Information programs. Problem documented by Micro$oft. And in this and other forums. Check his web site for a fix. Or restore the deleted registry files. I have a simple *.REG file that restores the missing registry entries also.

Hello Jack, That is very good thinking! I read that ToniArts RegCleaner could make
a mess of the Help system. When I used ToniArts it said something about taking 9
hours to process all of the files and was listing system files one after another,
so I took it off the system pronto!

Can you send me a copy of your .reg file please. That really IS a superb idea!
