I have a problem with trying to run both scandisk and defrag with multiable restarts
so I rebuted in safe mode hoping to be able do a scandisk and defrag without the
restarts. My system still restarts multiable times even in Safe Mode. How do I
find out what is running in the background and stop it ????? My system is a home
built pentium IV 550Mhz with 256mb ram I installed windows 98 SE and then upgraded
to ME.

You need to run scandisk from a DOS prompt with a bootdiskette in ME, as I do. And
you need to look for junk files and SpyWare on your system.
Windows Emergency BootDiskette, EBD STARTUP-DISK
QuickCleanUpBootDisk DOS COMMANDS
Automatic Deletion of TIF, TEMP & index.dat files. DELINDEX
Auto-Deletion of all other temp files: EMPTEMP 2.0 ERASER

Restarts in safe mode are generally attributable to one of 2 things:
1. Your screensaver is still active
2. You have a virus.
In the case of one, (the easy answer), disable it
In the latter case, update your virus defs and do a full scan.

And an after thought.
The MS database notes this as a solution, and I have seen a couple of posts indicating
that it has solved their restart problem, although I have yet to figure out how it
could be getting in the way in the first place.
And that is to disable your Quicklaunch toolbar.
