Question about 'How do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes'

I have a question about how to get to MS/Dos on Windows ME. By pushing and holding
F8 during start up I get only 4 options and MS/Dos is not one of them.
I don't have a task bar or a startup window and need to try Jack Gulley's advise
as posted on February 6.

With WINDOWS ME, if you need to get to command prompt - load a floopy disk that is
a Setup Boot disk, either for Windows 95, 98 or ME, and it will allow you to get
to the C:\ prompt once you have gotten to the A:\ on the dos screen.

Thanks for the tip, Jabuck. I got the disk but it is not helping me. The screen
still stays black. It sounds as if the disk is running for a few seconds, but then
stops completely. I am baffled by this whole thing and ready to trash this piece
of Compaq garbage (Laptop, Presario 1200)

Paul, Did ME come pre-loaded or do you have a cd and which bootdisk did you download.
The diskettes usually sounds like it is hesitating as it runs. DO you have power
to the monitor?---jabuck

Jabuck
I have power to the laptop which includes the monitor.
ME was pre-loaded so I have no CD nor disk. I downloaded and tried both of the ME
versions listed at bootdisk.com
I am getting the hammer out next.

Paul, try restarting the computer, without the bootdisk, and press F8 or ctrl as
it is booting and see if you can get into safe mode. This may take a few tries.
If you get in go to start>programs>accessories>ms-dos prompt>at the C:\windows> prompt
type sys c:(note space after sys)>enter. Maybe it will start.---jabuck

Jabuck, the irony is that I can get the safe mode screen up, but still not taskbar
or icons. I have safe mode written in all four corners, but that's it.

Jabuck,
I appreciate all your suggestions and the effort you seem to be putting into this.
Unfortunately, your last suggestion didn't do me any good either. I downloaded
the demon to a floppy and transferred it to my laptop. Nothing changed. I am still
staring a blank screen.

Paul, There is one other thing I can think of. Is the green light(led) comming on
after you insert the floppy and start the computer. If it isn't go onto the bios
and see if the removable device(floppy drive) is the first item listed or set to
first drive to boot. You should be able to get there by pressing F1 or delete as
the computer is booting up. It should be listed under Boot>Boot priority or something
similar. When you exit save the setting if you had to change it or reset defaults
if you didn't. Sometimes just going in there and back out resets things and lets
the system start operating again. Otherwise I'm out of ideas---jabuck
