Basically it boils down to increased desktop and file security & a more robust system
less prone to crashes.
When it does crash, recovery is easier & reinstalling the OS isn't usually necessary.
Downside is that it's more suited to the corporate environment & therefore a bigger
target for hackers & virus writers.
Not really mean't for gaming & entertainment.
Go with XP and you'll get the best of both world's.

Dude that like trying to compare gold (W2K) to coal (ME). Windows 2000 provides stability & speed unknown to most Microsoft products. ME is the biggest joke on the Os market.

In terms of how they're put together, ME and 2000 are very different. ME is a sort of upgraded version of 98, with a 2000-style interface but 98-compatible features - and therefore still DOS-dependent to an extent - whereas 2000 is based on Windows NT (actually it's NT5, but Microsoft doesn't want to admit that!). The two are entirely incompatible.
2000 is indeed far more stable and smoother-running than 98 or ME could ever be; installation is a lot easier. 2000's native NTFS format offers file security, including encryption, and it's a more efficient storage system than FAT32, which means programs generally run faster.
2000 is aimed mainly at 'serious', i.e. business and/or network users, whereas 98/ME is for everybody.
A crucial difference is that Microsoft will be supporting 2000 for quite some time yet, but shortly they will not be supporting 98 or ME - 98 is deemed to be obsolete, and ME is, quite simply, the biggest mistake Microsoft ever made.
There's no contest - go for 2000.
