Question about 'Stop Windows randomnly opening files, internet explorer and documents'

I am not sure if this is the relevant forum to post this question but I have searched
every where to find someone with the same problem.I can be working on windows for
any length of time and suddenly, internet explorer (google) will randomly open, 8
to 10 at a time, and an assortment of letters and dots will be randomly typing into
the search box. i.e. p...bb...pp.... It always begins with internet explorer and
then sometimes other programs will open such as the printer will automatically print
of the google front page, and other programs will randomly open. If it is a really
bad event the computer will rename documents and try to delete them. Restarting the
computer sometimes helps but not always. I was on Windows XP when this first happened.
I completely erased the hard drive and reloaded using windows ME. For a while there
was not a problem and then it has begun again. I have the hp 2110 all in one printer,
I have unplugged the USB cable, sometimes this resolves the problem but not always.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? and can you think of a way to resolve it,
Russell

Sounds like a worm/Trojan or virus or a browser HiJacker gone amok. And you are
getting re-infected because you don't have a firewall. You may need to do a clean
install and use a good Anti-Virus program and a firewall to prevent infection.
But start with running a full up to date Virus scan. If yours in not current,
try an Online one like HouseCall_AV and see if it picks up anything.
Then get a copy of
CWshredder and unzip it and run it to get rid of Coolwebsite if it has hijacked
your system.
Also try running
AD-Aware_v6 and/or SpyBot_S&D to see what they find after being updated online.
After checking the above you could get a copy of HiJack This and at the Spywareinfo site see what they find.

Thank you for your help.
I have the Norton Anti Virus installed and Norton Firewall installed, I think I had
both installed before this problem started. I have tried to detect a virus but no
such luck. I will definately check out the things that you suggested as the Virus
may have got passed Norton and be in the system somewhere.
If there are any other suggestions I am eager to hear them, this problem has been
baffling me for months.

Check through the list of Windows ME Fixes for things
you can do to clean up your system. Do the Memory tests as most machines have their
power on memory test bypassed and you would have no clue there is a memory problem,
except strange things happening.

I tried the suggested programs to remove the possible infection. There has been a
possitive result and I have not had a problem for a week, I think it was either ASEScanner
or the Hijack This program that got rid of the problem. There were quite a few files
in each program so I just deleted them all and the problem has not come back. Sorry
I could not say what it was exactly but thank you very much for suggesting these
programs and I hope it helps others in the future.

Whenever a computer starts opening files by the dozen, the first thing I do is reboot
using a different keyboard and mouse.
A stuck CTRL key, ALT key, Spacebar, or Mouse button caused all sorts of odd Windows
behavior, especially with USB keyboards. PS/2 Keyboards are even worse. Very rarely,
the keyboard controller on the computer's main board will have failed, causing similar
behavior.
Hope this helps.
