My daughter and a very elderly lady both have this same problem--20-28 hrs.of scan&defrag

Make sure that their screensavers are turned off during a defrag! Right click on
the desktop/Properties/ScreenSaver Tab/Select (none)/OK
This should do it.

I use to have the same problem. Try running scan disk and defrag in safe mode

They can clean up their Windows ME so that ScanDisk and Defrag run better. They
also have to disconnect from the Internet or disable their firewall logging during
these operations.
See
Windows ME Fixes for things to do that help
solve this problem.
