You can run Scandisk from Real Mode DOS. You'll need a Windows Startup floppy for
this. In case you haven't got one, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove
Programs > Windows Startup (tab) > Create Disk (button).
1. Leave the disk in the drive and reboot.
2. When you get the boot menu on the floppy disk, choose "Start computer without
CDROM support.
3. The next thing you'll see is the message "The diagnostic tools have been loaded
to drive "D". (The drive letter that appears here may be "E" if you've got more than
one partition). Type the drive letter shown followed by a colon. So if it's "D",
type D: and hit Enter.
4. The "A:" prompt should change to a "D:" prompt.
5. Type Scandisk and hit Enter.
You can't use the mouse here and will have to type the letter in bold print to execute
a given command. Also, choose to delete lost file fragments.
Once Scandisk has finished, remove the floppy and hit CTRL+ALT+DEL simultaneously
to reboot.
