Hi - I am trying to run either Norton DiskDoctor or scandisk from program/accessories and I get the message: "Unable to operate on drive C because it is in use by Unknown disk utility. Please close unknown disk utility to operate on drive C." Before that I would get "apps.inf" file missing and have tried to use some of the solutions I've read on this forum and it hasn't worked. Any idea??????? Thanks

Hi Cindy,

You can either run Scandisk in Safe Mode or by using a Windows Startup floppy. To deal with the Safe mode option first, do this:
1. Reboot the machine and immediately after the BIOS screen disappears, hit the F8 key a few times. You should get the Windows Startup menu. Choose #3 Safe Mode from the menu.
2. Whenever you boot into Safe Mode, Windows displays the "Help & Support" menu. You don't need that, so just close it. You can then go the normal route to Scandisk, or go to Start > Run, type: SCANDSKW.EXE and click OK.

To run Scandisk from a Windows Startup disk, create a disk like this:
1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Startup Disk (tab) > Create Disk (button).
2. Leave the disk in the drive and reboot.
3. From the menu that appears, choose "Start computer without CDROM support".
4. The next message you'll see is "The diagnostic tools have been loaded to drive D: (if you hard drive has two partitions, it will be "E:" and not "D:").
5. Type D: and hit Enter. This will change the drive letter from "A:" to "D:".
6. Type Scandisk and hit Enter to start the application.
If you see an option asking you if you want to convert lost file fragments, choose "Delete". You have to press the letters in bold print because the mouse doesn't work in Real Mode DOS which is where you will be if you use this method.

Once Scandisk has finished, remove the floppy and press CTRL+ALT+DEL simultaneously to reboot.
When the machine boots back to the desktop, try and run Scandisk again and make sure you checkmark the option "Autofix errors". You don't need to run a surface scan; the standard option is sufficient.
