Question about 'Getting Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers'

I have a question about Win 98 and ME working together. I have a simple 3 tier peer to peer network. Two machines are Win 98 and the other is ME. I have working lights on all machines listed on the switch and have checked and double checked the IP'a and protocols. However the two 98 machines see each other. The ME sees nothing. When I try to ping either of the other 98 machines it times out. I am begining to suspect the network card. When I do try to ping the other machines the switch shows not activity. Just stays constant lit. When I ping from any of the other two machines there is activity along all three lights. I thought about buying a new NIC card (cheap one that is) and checking that. Any other ideas?

On Windows ME system PING 127.0.0.1 (local loop back) to make sure its software is set up correctly. This should work even if the NIC is defective. Then PING the IP address of the system. It should respond also. If these work, then ping one of the others and watch the leds on that systems card. If it blinks, suspect the cable. If it does not blink suspect the adater or drivers.

Check the Network Adapter in the System - Device Manager properties. It should tell you the device is working.

If the 127.0.0.1 does not work, it is a software setup problem. Most common is the Winsock module.
