System Resources % free drops...

My system resources free % keeps dropping the longer I use the computer. DELL told
me my OS was corrupt so I have re-installed Windows ME successfully, but still have
the problem. Any suggestions? I don't think this is a typical problem with Windows
ME since it just started recently (since I downloaded an upgrade to NAV, which should
be totally unrelated, right?). Help please. I did uninstall/reinstall NAV too,
by the way.

I'm having a similar problem, but as far as I can tell, it has nothing to do with
a corrupt OS.
I think it has more to do with RAM usage. Every program you run grabs chunks of
RAM to use. *But*, they don't always want to give that RAM up, even after the programs
are shut down. So the longer the computer runs, the less memory and system resources
you wind up with.
There are a couple of ways to deal with it: either buy more RAM, or get a memory
management/optimizer program. I don't know what the best ones are-- can anyone recommend
some?

Mary, resources do tend to drop as you use your computer. That's just normal, but
as usual those mfgrs. tech support people don't know what they're talking about.
That's ridiculous to suggest reinstalling your OS because of resources.
Btw, I strongly advise against any Optimizer programs, that's not what you need,
but what's the % of resources you're concerned about? How low do they get? A reboot
wll gain back all your resources, FYI.

Carol: I start at about 65% free (used to be 85%+) and in about half an hour I am
down to 16% free...then eventually 0%. Something is draining it, but I don't know
what. The ONLY new application I upgraded was NAV 2004 and of course their tech
people have not responded to my questions.

There have been many posts on this forum lately, regarding resource problems.
It would be good to elimimate spyware as the culprit. Let's do this. Excuse the length,
and you may have done some of this already. Download the CWShredder: Merjin.org Direct download: CWShredder.exe
Close all browser windows and run it offline. Keep it on hand, as there are many
problems with this particular hijacker. He updates it frequently, so check for a
newer version often.
Next, run Spybot to clean out most of the spyware:
Download SpybotSD Close all running programs, install then reboot.
Start it and go online and press 'search for updates' tab. (NOTE: select the US or
Australian mirror site to download updates from, if you have problems). Download
all updates that aren't optional. Close all browser windows and run the scan. Then
click 'Check All', and fix everything Spybot labels in red. Reboot.
Then download: 'HijackThis'
Unzip 'HT' into a new folder. Close all browser windows and run it offline. Double
click the .Exe file to run it. Choose Scan. It will display a list. Most of the things
you see listed are necessary or required entries, so don't fix anything YET, until
you know which items to fix. For a description on the entries in the log, check here:
HijackThisTutorial
The Scan button will turn into Save Log. Choose Save log, then click Edit - Select
all and copy/paste the contents of the log file in a post.
PLEASE choose this Option below the message window before posting the log, so it's
formatted properly: Check this box to preserve your spacing....
Also, clear out your TIF and other temp files. Control Panel - Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files, choose to delete
all Offline content. Clear out Cookies. Also, go to Start - Find - Files or folders
- in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit - select all - File - delete. Empty
the contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. Empty
Recycle bin.
Have you gone through Jack Gulley's list of ME fixes and trimmed down your startups,
etc.? If you've been around the forum, you've most likely have seen this post.

Mary, I find it interesting that you recently downloaded NAV 2004. I did the same
thing last weekend and am having all kinds of problems with everything. I, too,
uninstalled it but am at a loss as to what to do next. I wish I could go back to
last Saturday. I would never have upgraded the NAV. I am watching for any solutions
you may receive.... sorry I can't help.

Try RamBooster! You´ll find it at www.download.com, and it´s free!

I experience a slow bootup. then the system resources go to 1% rapidly. I have 512RAM.
I went through the selective startup and found the problemtobe in the load programs.
I unchecked everything having to dowith norton systemworks, personal firewall, antivirus, etc.
and the problem is gone. So now I have to find out which part of norton is responsible.
When this happens, I can't cntrl/alt/delete because there aren't enough resources.
but ccapp isn't responding.
Perhaps there is a driver conflict. Have you completely removed Norton struff and
still have the problem? Could this be a virus? I did do a virus scan the day before
this became a big problem, but nothing was found.

A freind of mine is having similar problems - system resources drop like a stone
to single figures, but only when running IE Explorer connected to the Internet. Other
programs, like Word and Excel have only a minor effect. They are NOT running NAV.
I have tried all the usual housekeeping stuff, installed extra RAM and replaced IE
5.0 with I.E. 6.0. No diference. Same problem. 30 years in computing and I can't
figure this one.

I completely removed all norton stuff. I set Vcachemax to 70 % of RAM, and fixed
the virtual memory to 512. Then reinstalled norton. NOrton is resource hungry,
about leaving 70% free after boot, but the system seems stable now.

I'm having the same system resource problem. I have done all the cleanups, cw shredder,
selective startup, etc., etc. The resources even dropped when I had signed off the
internet, but was still running the computer. Something is causing a drain, but
not sure what. I have spent hours with Dell support and they now suggest reinstalling
Windows ME, something I don't want to do. I'm not sure that that is even necessary.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I have had the same problem since installing the updated IE6 and Norton Persnoal
firewall. Despite upgrading from 256 to 512Mb, I still get the System Resources dangerously
low message even with only IE and Outlook open. My resources available NEVER exceed
33% and hover between 16 and 4%. I have tried all of the disc cleanups, clearing
out background programs (as much as possible) and regular virus scans. Any ideas?

I have finally corrected the system resources problem, but not sure exactly what
worked. I installed adaware and a spyware protection (AOL version), but have to
run them daily. I still get IE pages loading and interfering, as I am not using
IE at all. I have to close out programs, such as rundll32 and others that bootup,
by ctrl, alt, delete in the program box. Nothing seems to solve that problem. The
problems started with IE upgrade to 6.0, never had it before.
Also, I clear out the *.tmp files daily, which may help.
If you solve the IE loading problem, let me know.

I wondered Sharon if you came to a solution. I use Yahoo IM and am haveing the very
same resource problem you had. IE was upgraded and I have been through ALL the steps.
Was there something you did since July 2004 besides upgrading to XP? Thanks for
any advice

I recently had problems with my Win ME and had to reinstall. Ran in to a number
of problems.
I was finally able to find a reference on the web that stated the IE 6.0 loads with
a file which is not compatible with Win ME but Win 2000.
Reloaded WinME after removing IE (use IEradicator free download) and Media Player
(Win ME will not reload with current versions of Media Player). Have not had some
of the same problems.
Still Tweaking the performance using info from putergeek.com and winguides.com.
