Any known problems would be on Merjin's website, I'm sure. Have you checked? It must have been put out just in the last day.

Thanks Carol. Downloaded the latest ver from a mirror site. It was a zip file and AV picked up some sort of corruption. Went and got the real thing from Merjins website and it seems ok. Maybe just a zip error,(??) The enemy must be anxious to keep honest people's computers not their own :)

I always post a link to Merjin's new website. Plus, with all the new problems cropping
up, I started adding a direct DL link to the .EXE. Many times people don't end up
with the newest version put out, if they don't make sure they update it.

Have a look on this page at some of the issues, that have come up. It's ridiculous.
Note the URL: http://216.180.233.153/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Plus, they've given a new URL to use (more than once), because there's one variant
that won't let you access spyware help forums and closes Spybot, AW and Shredder,
when you try to run them! PepiMK put out a fix for that problem. That's the SmartSearch
variant, I believe.

P.S. That live link to the Chronicle is the same. I only posted to show what the address is.

I'll take a look. Too bad we have to be so... paranoid (?) just to work the net. Oh well....

I might beware of the MS update that the CWshreader
links to. I downloaded the update from MS corporate
site and IE crashes regularly now. It's the first security
update I've done on this box in 3 years, and IE seems
trashed now.

When you did the IE security updates, did you do as advised and close all other programs, including your AV and Firewall. Not closing these can cause problems.

If you do the updates correctly, there is only one minor problem I am aware of (vertical slide bar in Frames at random stick to the bottom), caused by the last IE security update.

Try, disconnecting from the Internet, booting into Safe Mode, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, select the "Microsoft Internet Explorer ... and Internet Tools" line, then click Add/Remove. On the options screen, select the "Repair Internet Explorer" line. When done, reboot system and check. You then need to go back the the Windows Update site and check for reloading any of the security updates.

The security updates help prevent some these virus and browser hijackers from getting in so easy.

Hey Jack. I didn't install the update on line. I downloaded the update to the PC, and then did the install after a reboot to make sure little was running. No software firewall or AV on this PC. Use a router with firewall. I have a couple other PC's so getting IE fixed on the ME box hasn't been a concern yet, but I will try your repair directions. Thanks.

Just tried to repair IE, and its not listed in add and remove programs, or the Windows, setup components. I now remember seeing other ME posters with this problem.

I assume you scrolled the Add/Remove Programs window down to look at all the entries. If it is not there, then it means you have not correctly installed the IE 5.5 SP2 or IE 6.0 SP1 updates from Microsoft web site. If you have one of these downloaded and save on the disk or a CD, you could try running it again.

You are right, I have never updated IE on ME. It's still using the default IE 5.5. I did a little internet research and found IE 5.5 is integrated into ME, unlike Win 98. At this point i will just live without IE, until I am at a point of doing a reinstall if something else goes bad. I have got other web surfers at my disposal. Thanks for the information.

If you haven't installed SP2, that should list it in Add/Remove. It's only about
a 400 kb download.

I just wanted to mention it, because I don't know whether you installed the updates
separately or not. You just said you installed updates.

CWshreader had a link to one specific MS update. I downloaded that one update and installed it and IE now closes as soon as it is opened. It is called the the ByteVerifier patch. It is listed after you run CWshreader on it's back page so to speak.

Isn't that just a Java VM update? That's what the s'posedly patch was, but I've had
the latest MS Java ver. 3810 for a year now and still got hit with one of the first
variants.

That's why you can't repair, that wasn't an upgrade. Download the SP2. This is the
best of I.E., seriously. In fact, other 9x users could download it here, rather than
a full download somewhere. That "should" list it. If not, there are two other ways
to repair it.

Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and Internet Tools for Windows Me

Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt:

Start - Run - type: rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Note: It would be best to copy/paste the line into the run box. It's case sensitive.

OR: Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Information tool - From
Tools the menu - choose IE Repair Tool -- Repair IE.

The patch seemed pretty harmless, that is why I downloaded it from MS. It should protect the PC though, since IE can't access the internet :) now.

I'm sure that patch is only the latest JavaVM, and I doubt it protects a system from
any JS Exploit. At any rate, that won't give you the option to repair I.E. If I can
install SP 2 on a 95b system without crashing, anyone should be able to without a
problem. That's a couple years ago, that I installed it!

I'd restore a good registry backup, if it were me, but you're not me! lol You can
download the latest MS Java here, instead of from MS site.

Thanks Carol and Jack, I saved a link to this thread on my Desk top. I will take a stab at Fixing IE later. I have another browser on the PC and can still get to the net with the puter, I was just kidding about not being able to get on line with it. I have had a copy of XP waiting for this PC for sometime, and the PC despite having ME on it has run great for about 3 Years. I have been saying for about a year now the next time the PC is ready for a reinstall i would just put a copy of XP on it, but I have wanted to get my moneys worth out of the ME install. :)

You're welcome. The way it sounds, XP will be obsolete, if you wait much longer?! :)

The worm and virus writers are sure tring to make XP obsolete. :), but I have installed it on other household PC's and it works great. You just got keep it behind a firewall, but that is good practice anyway. I did download the IE service pack and installed it, I did get IE working again, but it did get the " sorry for the inconvience ,but got to close" message twice, but it does show in the remove program list now, if the problem gets to bad I will do the IE repair and see what happens. Well thanks, and don't open any email attachments. :)
