windows ME PCI Multimedia Audio Device driver

I'm running Windows ME. I removed Realtek AC'97 Audio. On the reboot I got the
msg new hardware detected. The wizard could not find the driver and I don't have
the disks. I now have no sound.
When I go to add hardware, it shows 'PCI Multimedia Audio Device. The driver for
this device is not installed'.
My mother board is SIS 962LUA. I went to the SIS site and brought down/unzipped
drivers. I also brought down and installed Realtek driver.
The add new hardware install driver wizard still can't find the driver on C:.
Help would be appreciated.

Are you going through the Add New Hardware icon/applet? If so, try going into System
Properties instead.
You can also, do this way....right click My Computer - choose Properties. Under Device
Manager, expand the + next to your sound device. Highlight and choose remove. Reboot.

Yes I was going through add hardware. If I remove PCI Multimedia Audio Device and
reboot. What will happen. Will windows attempt to install it again? Will it find
the driver? Please explain what will happen.

It should find the driver, as long as it's on your hard drive. It normally works
fine that way. After removing the device in Device Mgr. and rebooting, once back
at the desktop, you should get a message that Windows has detected new hardware and
will reinstall the software for it.
If for some reason the driver's still not installed, you'll need to install them
manually, from the directory they're in, by browsing to the location.

That worked as you said. But still couldn't locate the driver. It followed the
same steps as if you choose add hardware. Problem now is I don't know what the driver
is called. I tried pointing to C: so it would search the whole drive. But still
no luck.

You'll need to locate the directory you downloaded them to. There may be an .inf
file, but I don't know for sure.
I can't help any further, since I can't see what's there. It's time to call a friend
over, for some hands on help.

I ended up using the retsore feature to bring the system back to the day before the
delete. It restored the sound driver but messed up Norton Antivirus. So I located
the drivers and copied them to my D drive. Then restored back to the current day.
When I pointed to the drivers on the D disk it still didn't work.
I then decided to restore back again to the day before and reinstall Norton. The
restore stopped working. So I gave up and am leaving it as is.
Bottom line is pc technology is mess. Can't wait till it catches up with mainframes
in reliability.

You just need to know what you're doing and how to go about it.
