Look in your c:/windows folder for a folder called cabs. That's your OS install. Copy that to a CD. As far as a bootdisk goes, you can always check out bootdisk.com

You have to be able to boot the system with either Windows or some version of DOS that supports the 32bit FAT and Long File Names. MS DOS 6.22 and below will not do.

If you can boot the system into Safe mode, you can start the SETUP program in C:\Windows\Options\Install folder. (sometimes its in the C:\Windows\Options\CABS folder). If not, then you need a Windows 98/ME boot or startup diskette. You can make one on any running Windows ME system. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup disk tab.

If you are stuck with only a Windows 95 or NT/XP system you can use the BOOTDISK.com web site to download a diskette image and their utility to make a boot diskette. Then from the boot diskette's A:\ prompt, run C:\Windows\Options\Install\SETUP and have your systems ProductKey handy.

Hello Castor, Can you start Windows in safe mode, by tapping on the F8 key during
the start-up?

When you say an MS DOS Bootdisk is this the bootdisk for ME? If so that is also called
the start-up disk(ette) (floppy)

If you can start in safe mode all may be well and you can start in there but you
don't say what led up to you not being able to start. Is the Hard-Disk Drive full
maybe? If so Windows cannot generate a swap-file and won't start.

If you put Delindex.bat (from www.burzurq.com) onto the start-up bootdiskette you
can clean out all of the junk files and you may get a start.

If you can see the choice screen after booting on the floppy choose Minimum Boot
and when the prompt loads type: A:\>delindex , and press Enter, then choose, R ,
for Run at the next screen.

Then type: A:\>scanreg /fix /opt

Then type: A:\>scandisk /all /surface

Then type: A:\>scandisk /all /autofix , if you have problems.
Also the C:\_RESTORE Folders can use up all of the drive space and prevent starting
and as you cannot start you may as well delete them.

Try following through this clean-up routine before you go any further.

Windows Emergency BootDiskette, EBD STARTUP-DISK

QuickCleanUpBootDisk  DELINDEX.BAT

BOOTDISK ARCHIVE

And ALL DOS COMMANDS

Manual deletion of: TEMP folders, Temporary Internet Files, (_RESTORE & Datacoll,
ME) from DOS prompt.

A:\>DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\TEMP , [ENTER] will delete the TEMP folder and sub-folders.

A:\>DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\Tempor~1 , [ENTER] will delete the Temporary Internet Files.

A:\>DELTREE C:\_RESTORE , [ENTER] will delete the _RESTORE folder AND sub-folders.

A:\>DEL C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DATACOLL\*.* , will delete the useless DATACOLL
files whilst you are doing this.

A:\>DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\Downlo~1 , [ENTER] will delete all of the Downloaded Program
files from the Internet, which might be causing you problems.

A:\>DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\UserData , [Enter] will remove all the old User Data files
from this folder.

Making a SYSTEM SPECIFIC bootdisk, using a bootdisk from a ... DIFFERENT ... computer:

Get to the A:\> , prompt, choosing "minimum boot" using the bootdisk which you have
made or borrowed, then:

Type: A:\>copy C:\windows\command\ebd A:\ , then ... REMOVE ... the first bootdisk!

To start an overinstall the system needs to be cleaned out of all junk files, as
above. If you ARE able to do this then you can attempt to overinstall:

A:\>C: and press Enter, to get the C:\> prompt, then,

C:\>WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\INSTALL.EXE , and press enter.
