Stella, you're not stupid, just because you don't know something yet.
If you're new, it would be best to wait on the 'tweaking' stuff in the registry.
I don't know "how new" you are, though. We need to feel these things out here, so
we keep people out of trouble! he he.
One mistake in the registry editor, and your system can become inoperable. You may
know that already? Do you know how to back up the registry? It's not that you should
fear making changes, when you know what you're doing and how to do it. Even advanced
users need to have a respect for it, so to speak. :)
I checked that article, you're referring to, that's just something to speed up the
time it takes to bring the start menu up. Is that what you're really looking to do?
I thought that may not have been clear to you and isn't really what you're looking
for.

Carol,
Thank you for your responce. My computer has been moving very, slow lately and I
have lost my sound. I did down load a program called spybot and may have lost the
sound using it. I can't find time to correct things because I work 12 hour shifts
and cook and clean and all that good stuff. If you can tell me any help ful hints
I would appreciate it. Thank you again.

Hi Stella, I'm sorry, I meant to get back to you sooner.
It sounds like you need a vacation. I can see why you haven't much time! First, it's
very important, that I know the exact name of the 'spybot' program you downloaded.
Anything "advertised" (sponsored links), on Google should be avoided. Many people
end up with a fake rip-off program, thinking it's SpybotS&D by PepiMK. There are
so many of those programs now, that only claim to remove spyware and are actually
spyware or hijackers themselves. If that's the case, uninstall, whatever it is, and
let me know what the exact name of it is.
The one from this website, is the one you should have.
http://www.safer-networking.org
Meanwhile, I suggest you download the CWShredder on the bottom of this page, and
run it, just to be sure. There are many problems with this hijacker. It has many
variants. The Shredder is just a small standalone application and needs no installing.
CoolWebSearch Chronicles Run the CWShredder.exe file. Close all browser
windows and press FIX to scan and clean. Reboot and run the Shredder again. Keep
it in a folder, so you have it. Check for Updates frequently using the update
feature within the Shredder and replace the previous download.
Also, clear out your temp files and ActiveX Controls. Go into Internet Options -
General tab. Delete temporary internet files, and choose to delete all Offline content.
In Settings, set the size of your TIF folder between 5 - 10 MB. Also, under General
tab - choose Setting - View Objects. In the window that opens, choose View Details
on the toolbar. If any of those ActiveX Controls are marked "unknown" or "damaged",
remove them. Remove any that you don't recognize. Any and all ActiveX Controls, can
be safely removed. They'll be downloaded again as needed. To uninstall, right click
and Remove. You may want to keep those by MS, Macromedia or Apple.
Also, go to Start - Find - Files or folders - in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose
Edit - select all - File - delete. Empty the contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder
and C:\temp folder, if you have one. Empty Recycle bin. You'll be surprised at what
a difference it makes, if you don't clear these out regularly.
There are a lot of tips I could give you, but Jack Gulley's ME Fixes webpage covers
so many areas. Removing unnecessary applications from your startup, is important.
Jack Gulley's advice is, "Remove PCHealth and TuneUp from Scheduled tasks, and PCHealth
and TaskMonitor from Startup tab in MSCONFIG." Windows ME Fixes page
It would be a very good idea to download and install SpywareBlaster. It blocks bad
ActiveX Control installs, which is how a lot of baddies are installed. It doesn't
need to be running and can spare you a lot of problems in the future. Be sure to
check for and download updates after installing it, and frequently, thereafter.
