What do if I can't boot or get to my ME BIOS?

I have a question about What do I do if my BIOS is causing a problem with Windows?:

I have a Sony PCG-140FX, PIII, 384 RAM notebook. I installed a new 20 GB HD (10 GB was the original HD size) and used my System Recovery disk to re-install software. ME installed and system came up but froze. I was able to re-boot, but system would freeze after about 5 minutes. Now the system will not boot or even come up to the Logo screen to access the BIOS.

Can you boot into safe mode or to a bootdisk? (Assuming that you have a floppy drive.)

Did you run scandisk after formatting the new drive? Have you tried running it in
safemode or from the bootisk? Have you tried defragging in safe mode?

If you have used a boot floppy in the install process are you sure that IT is virus
free?

Did you check with Sony if the BIOS would accept the bigger drive as there can be
limitations on drive size? AND ... (sorry) do you know if there is a BIOS update
available on the Sony web-site?

The system boots sporadically (about every 5th time), but continues to freeze after about 5 minutes. This happens even in safe mode. My BIOS has an update, but I can't get the system stabilized long enough to update. I can't figure out what is causing it to freeze. I have tried not loading SYS.INI, window driver files, smartdrv and others - same results. SCANDISK did not find any errors on the drive, it is listed in the BIOS. Did not get a chance to Defrag, yet. I think the BIOS update is required to stop the sporadiac booting (10GB vs 20GB). But I can't figure out what driver or program is causing the system to freeze when it does boot. It may be BIOS related too. I guess I will have to break down and take it to the shop. My guess he will have to use a 10 GB HD to stabilize the system to update the BIOS and then replace my 20 GB to see if it works. Any other ideas, before I dig deep in my pocket???

Your problem could me your RAM. The RAM stick could of gone bad. Take the RAM you have in it now out and try a different one that you know is good. Even if it's smaller than what you had in it, at least you'll know it it's that or not. If it works, you can add more to it later. If you don't have an extra one, see if a friend has one you can borrow just to check it. If needed, go buy a new one, if it don't work, take it back. If it does, well then it wasn't a waste of money. Good Luck!

I hjust read Betty's reply and wondered if you have added a whole bunch of RAM at
the same time as you increased the disk size? If so you will be getting problems
with the vcache if you go to 512Mb or over. Some systems do and some don't get this
problem. If the video memory is inclusive you don't get the problem if the video
memory is exclusive (on the video card) you can get a problem as the total memory
is 512Mb plus whatever you have on the video card.

If this is the case you can take one module out (assuming that you have more than
one) and alter the vcache settings, shut-down, and put it back in.

Or you can open msconfig Advanced settings, and set the memory limit to whatever
you want it to be.

Putting a check-mark in the memory setting will remove the grey in the window so
you can alter the setting.

OR it may be that your swap-file is either corrupt and/or is not generating properly
when Windows needs it. If you can get into the control panel System, Performance,
Virtual memory you can set a permanent 1000Mb Min & Max to give a 1024Mb swap-file
ON the drive.

Alternatively you can delete your existing swap-file from a bootdiskette DOS prompt
and then re-boot to see if the old one was corrupt. (I think I mentioned the possibility
of re-introducing a virus if there is one on your existing bootdisk.)

To delete the swap-file:

A:\>DEL C:\WINDOWS\WIN386.SWP , and press Enter. or, as it is sometimes on the root
of C:

A:\>DEL C:\WIN386.SWP

SWAP-FILE WIN386.SWP

"I guess I will have to break it down and take it to the shop. My guess he will have
to use a 10 GB HD to stabilize the system to update the BIOS and then replace my
20 GB to see if it works."

You may be right. We'll see. ;-)
